how much do your hobbies cost...
« on: April 03, 2004, 09:55:11 AM »
A lot.

Women.. not too bad... several hundred a month but my house get's cleaned and she can be fun to hang out with a couple days a week...

Cars... Hot rods (in my case, same thing)... A lot... thousands a year.  Destroying parts and adding new stuff cost thousands... incresed gas and back tires...  Worth it to me like tinkering and improving... like driving something that looks nothing like anything else on the road.   Like the conversations at gas stations and on the road wherever I stop.

guns... Initial invetment was high but not so much now... Ammo is cheap for the fun I get out of it... reloads are about $4.00 a box for most things I shoot... makarov ammo is cheap russian stuff at about the same by the 1,000... cleaning supplies and reloading supplies (not powder slugs or primers) are about a couple hundred a year.

AH... new puter every 3 years or upgrade half way through that... a grand or two... controllers... couple hundred a year.  but... I use the puter for other things so... not all an AH expense... subscription?  seems like nothing after years of $2 an hour stuff.

oops... movies... spend several hundred dollars a year on DVD's  have about 200 of em now.   Needed somethoing to do with the 60" TV tho and hate commercials.

DvDs - I buy 2-3 a paycheck (every 2 weeks)

Guns - Initial investment and then minimal.  I spend maybe $20/mo in the off-season and $50/month when in the summer.

Photography - Initial investment of $1500.  One more $1600 purchase coming then I'm done for a while.

Not much on cars right now (actually trucks), but that will start up in about 2 years.  I want to drop a 383 into the blazer and get the pickup a little more reliable.  I'd like to get a 65 mustang fastback or a 66 chevelle and do a full restoration too... but that's more like 10 years out.

Women - Tomato & I try to maintain self-sufficiency - keep things even.

Cars - I really need to get rid of that Beetle this summer. It was fun for a while, but that time has passed. Replaced the 2.8i V6 Golf with a 1.9 GTi/TDi. The trade cost £6000 but the fuel savings in 3 years will be about £3000, plus there will be insurance savings.

Guns - the only shooting I'm likely to do is with Lazs. He didn't charge anything for the ammo last time, so we bought his lunch at the local Dixon Mexican. But we did run out of ammo for the .22 Witness. Shame. That was my favourite.

AH. Upgraded about 6 months ago - Asus A7N8X mobo, AMD XP2600, memory & Radeon 9600 - didn't cost a fortune, but then there was the iiyama Vision Master Pro 454. That cost quite a bit, but was worth it.

Movies - I buy a lot second hand off Amazon. My local video/DVD rental place charges £3.50 for 24 hours. If I can buy the movie second hand on Amazon for around £6, it's worth it - and share movies with friends.

Trips away from home: Big expense. That jaunt to CA last Oct. cost quite a wad (about £400 each just for airfare, then there was the con and accom. charges in the 6 days we stayed in CA after the con), and through the year I'll make numerous jauntettes around Europe, sometimes using my own car, sometimes fly-drive. That mystery island last month was Madeira, by the way. Later this month we'll be hitting France again - La Rochelle on the Bay of Biscay for the May Day weekend. About £100 each for the return flight, and about the same for the rental car. Haven't even booked a hotel yet...

My Collection.  It's ordered by date of purchase.  I think I bought "Dead Man" right around the first week of January.  So those above it would be the last 3 1/2 months.

Women - $50.00 a month if i'm single. 10 fold if i'm latched down.

Paintball - after 9 years finally replaced my Tippmann Prolite with the Tippman A5. Prolite repair cost $10.00. A5 replacement $220.00. Ammo for the year - throw in another $500.00 if you play at Skirmish USA.

Flying - If you run into a lot of hot women, the cost per date goes through the roof. In my case - usually involves dinner on Block Island or Nantucket - so figure $600.00 per month on top of what I teach.

MT, whats your email address?  I have quite a collection of armor that is left over from my business.  All new and unopened.  Would be willing to part with them for $5.00 over cost if you or anyone else is interested.  MY email is nawcdgreen@yahoo.com
I regret doing business with TD Computer Systems.

So far my hobbies are rather expensive.

1.5 aircraft.
motorcycle
5th wheel RV
Volvo semi tractor motorhome to pull RV
a very full large gun vault (no recent purchases)
Several 35mm cameras
scuba equipment including 3 tanks
hiking camping stuff

Now I have to thin it down as we are going to be on the road full time in our RV. sigh......

The planes are for sale as well as a couple other vehicles like a car and 1 ton PU truck. 2 months and counting down.......

Wow - hundreds! I meant to ask you what you generally pay for DVDs in the US. Your site gives some price details, eg. $24.98 SRP for Life of Brian - is that what you actually pay or is that price discounted?

My last 2 purchases were Johnny English (£6 + P&P secondhand from Amazon) and Von Ryan's Express (£8.99 retail from MVC). I see you've got Bullitt - my favourite McQueen movie. Damn clever plot... "you sent us to guard the wrong man, Mr. Chalmers!"

Also, your ID on that site is MrHanky. Did you ever fly in AH with that handle? I seem to remember coming head to head with a Mr.Hanky.

Diecast Airplanes, DVD's, Osprey Books and Squadron Signal Books, Gamecube Games. Some other things that will remain classified.

Lets just say its more than I can really afford.
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

Here in the states, if I buy new it's usually at Deep Discount DVD or at (blech) Walmart.  For used, I usually hit Ebay or the local video store that sells previously viewed for $10 per.

I've come to the realization on just how poor I really am...sad.

Flying - Going on $19,000 for the last 12 months alone.  That includes Private Multi, Instrument, Commercial single and multi and CFI-A&I.  Spent total from my intro ride to rating completion about $22k, I did quite well.  Only took out a small loan to finish up instrument.

Guitar - Not bad, 800 at the mega-huge-sale after talking down the guy (who happened to be my buddy hehe) to cost.

Guitar Accessories - Amp, Mic, Mic stands, Cable ect ect...800 again.  thanks to musiciansfriend.com

Golf...Havent bought a golf club or paid for a golf ball in 4 years...not bad. (yaaaaay sponsors)

Paintball - Have $1500 "worth" of gear, paid close to that.  Couple cases of paint a month plus air...yikes.

R/C Airplanes, thanks to JKAerotech they aren't expensive...maybe $1000/yr on kits, electronics and fuel.

Girl...Loves loves loves flying two birds with one stone there, likes eating a burger...yaaaay.  Figure 2-3 $100 Hamburger trips/month.  Shes got her own car, own place and own rich family.  I just buy flowers, a bit of jewelery here and there and i'm good to go.

This personality stuff can save you a lot of money.  And now i realize...i have none.  I'm going to pout.
