AKAK - or anyone who has seen Von Ryan's Express
« on: April 03, 2004, 01:59:04 PM »
Hey AKAK!

I was in my retail DVD store a while back. Picked up a copy of Von Ryan's Express for £8.99. I hadn't seen it for years. That P38G - is that right at the beginning - Von Ryan's plane which he ditches?

Later on as the POW train progresses towards Switzerland, it comes under attack from 3xMe109. Can you tell me which variant of 109 these three planes were?

ROFL! I had the devil's own job trying to extract that pic... I was hoping someone with day to day knowledge of WW2 aircraft might recognise it. ;)

Is that the one where Frank Sinatra gets killed chasing after the train at the end?  (sorry for spoiler for those that haven't seen it! :))

Did all that, pasted the pic - looked OK at first, but when webpage was refreshed, I got the night fighter version.

Furb - I'd be glad to lend you the DVD if you'd like.

Replicant - Yes.

They used 108's Taifuns (or equivilant) to attack the train later in the film, perhaps the same?

Its a tandom seat plane that attacks the train.  Think its the same plane they used in Indiana Jones.

I myself do remember the 109s look like some modified hollywood plane to look like a 109.

The P38 is only there at the very beginning before it goes down in flames. I can see why AKAK relates to it so well. :lol:aok

Yeah finally saw Von Ryan’s Express a few weeks ago.. Hadn't seen it in years.

Beginning of the movie they show it as 1943 a few weeks before Italy’s capitulation. Were p38’s stationed around there?.. Malta?.. Sicily?

We first see Frank in his Hollywood tight fitting leather jacket slacks and cap.. In later scenes he’s wearing his flight suit.. Now did he jump out of his airplane with a suitcase? Did he get his Red Cross package that included a flight-suit?..  Minor inconsistencies.

Trevor Howard started out as a stage actor... It shows.  Not to take anything away from Frank but Trevor had to carry the movies emotional highs and lows. When Frank had to shoot that Italian girl, now c’mon.. what was that... oh.. he’s upset about it.. (for 3 seconds)

Most of the German guards carried the M40 machine gun.. I guess that’s accurate.. Why is it during this period  (mid 60s) directors never show flying brass?.. Seems to me if you want to show extreme violence the flying brass really adds to the scene.. Come to think of it they never show guys reloading their weapons.

The Germans wouldn’t post guards on the border with Switzerland?

The 109’s had rocket pods.. In our game we only get two lousy rockets.. These planes looked like they had at least six apiece..  Some pretty bad shots eh.. what do you mean you can’t hit the broad side of a train?.

The close up on the lead pilot looked fairly accurate.
