A few issues......
« on: April 20, 2004, 07:46:20 AM »
Hi folks, new to the game.  Just installed it the other night and have had a few aggrivating issues.  Not nearly as aggrivating as getting my bellybutton beat in this game, but what am I going to do?

1.  Connection troubles - I'm running on a DSL, speed is usually round 'abouts 550k each way.  I did previously have the zone alarm fire wall on, but I installed it thinking it would help.  Whe I load the game and click online and enter the password to connect a timer comes up and goes for a while, then it asks whether I'd like to use an alternate route.  Same thing happens.
Sunday night, it just took me a few times to log on, last night I was sitting here for 3 hours trying to to get it to log on.

2.  Random Annoying Crash - For some odd reason, when I'm in the non flight portions of the game, I'm subject to the occasional boot to desktop.  I read soemthing on this board about too much ram, which I suppose is possible with 1 gig of ram on the machine, but it should be noted that my ram tests fine as well as runs everything else fine.  Other usefull specs, I'm on a radeon 5700 series video card and I run Win XP.

3.  Lock up! - After Random Annoying Crash (TM) (See number 2) if I try to log back on, the machine will lock up and just stick when I try to log on.  AH will stop responding and I have to reboot.

Alternately, last night was just rediculous as I couldn't even get on the  HTC web site.  Everything else connected fine, but for some unknown reason I couldn't get on to AH and I couldn't even get on this site to read the message board to figure out what the hell I was doing wrong.

thanks folks

Last night there appears to have been an outage in a major Internet hub in Dallas which affected many players attempting to connect to the servers.

I do not believe there is a Radeon 5700.  Is it an Nvidia 5700 or a Radeon 9700?

As Skuzzy said, there was definitely some kind of internet problem last night - actually this morning for me.  I couldn't get into the HTC website/forums and tried the game out of interest.... couldn't get into that either.  Seems at some point after I had gone to work I finally made the connection to the forums though, because when I logged on at lunchtime, nearly 7 hours ago, it said I had last connected at 09.25 am (04.25 am Eastern) - half an hour after I got to work!  Of course, that meant all messages up until that point had been marked read..... hate it when that happens.... :(

Sorry about that Skuzzy, it was a late evening and an early morning.  I have a Radeon 9700 series card.  Drivers updated, yada yada.

Also, I should rephrase something from the earlier post:
I UNINSTALLED ZoneAlarm thinking that it was causing the connection troubles.

I suppose, that it is feasible that uninstalling zonealarm could have fixed that problem, and I didn't realize because of last nights internet outage.  I will update as needed when I try this evening.

As for the crash to desktop thing, I have tried reinstalling the software but it hasn't seemed to have helped.

Is there a log feature that would keep track of data in the game (frame rate, connection info) that I could perhaps review after the crash occurs to see if there is some sort of event that is causing it?

Too much RAM?  I don't think you read the whole thread.  The only way too have too much RAM is if one or more of the modules is bad as was the case in that post.  Y our CTD's may be due to other apps running in the background.  One of the easiest ways to fix this is with EndItAll2.  Welcome to AH.

Yup, I messed that part up too.  Remind me:  no more posts before the first cup of coffee in the morning.

Both of the sticks of ram I have in there test fine.  I was trying to think of other aps running behind, and I can't think of anything intrusive......

The only 2 I can think of causing a problem would be:

XPram - manages memory, frees it up when needed.  I've been meaning to kill that for a while now, it just came in handy when I was in the middle of my morrowind addiction.

Screenshot! -  Takes a mid-res pictures every 3 or 4 seconds.

The only reason why I'm not sure about those things causing the issue, is that these crashes only seem to occur when in a non-flight area.

Thankyou for the welcome.

By the way, reinstalling the software does not remove all the possible things that could potentially cause a crash to the desktop.
If you did not physically remove the Aces High directory, then you still have some files that could cause some problems.

The most notorious folders that could cause this type of problem are the "settings" and "squads" folders.  If you simply rename them and restart the game, the game will act like a brand new installation.

Skuzzy,

After uninstalling the game, I killed the directory.

Well, how about sending me the output from a DXDIAG?  Might show something, might not.

Gladly.  When I return home, I shall post it here?  Or would you rather have it via email or something?

Go ahead an email it if you would.  Too much data for a post to the bulletin board.
