Dust has settled......
« on: January 02, 2000, 06:12:00 PM »
We now have several days of simming with the new version and I feel compelled to evaluate
it based on my own limited observations (B-17, P-51, Me-109, Maccii, Spitfire and Nk1).

Overall a nice piece of work.  The new smoke and debris effects are stupendous and the addition of stress effects, sounds (including rushing air) have added nicely to what is shaping up as the one sim to beat.

However, some things seem way whacked out.
I understand that more work is needed but I am still uncomfortable with several issues
and hope dearly that things fall into place nicely: The stress failure on P-51s is totally out of balance with respect to that particular FM.  Although the P-51 historically shyed away from ground support due to its coolant vulnerability, I cant take this plane into combat.  It simply dies too easliy with me at the controls.  I enjoy a scrap but if success requires only the bounce and extend then I am not going to be successfull.  In any event, having this current stress fatique model without proper drag modeling is simply a disaster waiting to happen in the Z&B 51.  The Nk1 is shaping up to be a Ki-43 with A8 lethality and doesnt suffer from any perceptable stress failures that I have encountered.  Kudos here to Torque for flying that baby to the edge and beyond in a very respectable manner.

The Spitfire now has the the legendary *climb away* capability that only the 109 has historically had in flight sims previous.

In summary: this version is the best yet but has consequently generated more work needing to be done than any previous release.

Heres to future times!

I don't know.
Several timesin V.43 I have put ten to twenty 20 and 30mm rounds (FW 190) into Mustangs at what I thought were effective ranges (d150 to d400), only to see them run away, apparently unharmed.

Yeager - The P-51D gee limits were much lower than the earlier models.  I forget the exact figures though, so I can't say if the AH model is wrong or right.  But when they redesigned the plane to carry the Merlin and more fuel, they did not beef up the structure to support the extra weight, and the limit load factor fell as a result.

The G's limits and stresses I can live with, because I honestly have no clue to what they should be.  My guess that they still will be tweaked some more in the future.

My real hope is that someday soon, that "Big Fan" hanging on the front of the A/C will actually induce some drag when the engine is throttled back.  Currently it is very hard to slow down, even enough to drop your flaps and land.

I am not really sure if this is/was an actual practice, but the only way I can slow down in his version is by inducing a full rudder, hard skid.  The 190 seems to be able to slow the easiest, all I have to do is turn a little.

I am prepared to wear out the knees in my "Fancy New Uniform" to get induced propreller drag.

I find it ironic that you mention the George. The wings break off mine every time I try to fly the thing.

Mino,
I would love to see prop pitch control also..it would add alot.

I can't speak for WWII fighters, but my uncle flew B-25's in the war, and he spoke about using slip to reduce speed.  On landing approaches and when joining formations if he was closing in a little to hot.

Exactly Cobra- I use slip all the time. A little cross-control (rudder/aileron) and control speed with the elevator. Sometimes, when I'm deadstick and trying to set down on a high field this is the only way to make it.

I have to disagree with you about George.
First 2 sorties I flew after the change I lost wings both times in a dive.

It fly's nothing like the Ki-43, turns are not nearly as easy as the 43, or zeke.

It actually flies most like a ki-84 but it seems to lack the 84's trouble with spins.

Getting in a turn fight with a spit is a sure fire way to die fast. You can't outrun anything on the deck.  However it is fun to fly & don't get in front of my nose if you want to live

Looking forward to more changes as they keep working on things.
