That's a valid point. I guess the way the NFL sees it is, the draft is set up to give each team the rights to that player. The player is under no obligation to play for that team, but if he doesn't then he can't play for the NFL at all.
I look at Bo Jackson and John Elway's situations. Bo elected to avoid playing for the Buccaneers by playing baseball instead. Elway forced a trade.
I can think of worse teams to play for than the Chargers. Arizona Cardinals comes to mind. Detroit Lions is another. Bengals and Browns, too.
At this point, San Diego would be foolish to draft Eli, unless they threaten a trade to any of the above-mentioned teams.
