why should anyone use a torp?

1 of the good things about festerMA is the fleets

i find myself fighting alot of navy battles and trying to sink Cvs which bring me to the point.
what advantage does the torpedo have vrs regular bombing?
its very hard to hit with it, you have to go LOW SLOW and CLOSE. and it doesnt seem to do more dammage then regular bombs.

so why should anyone use it?


I know that in real life torpedos where extremely effetive vrs. ships. HA doesnt seem to moddel that

which is more effective, a 500Kg torpedo or a 500Kg bomb?

IF it hits, a torpedo will do more damage then an equal size bomb simply due to the fact that it hits below the water line (and water creates a much stronger concussion then air).

I've read somewhere the torpedos weren't very effective in WWII and most of the ship sinking from the air, were done by dive bombers.

in midway, the only good thing torpedo planes achived was to keep the defenders busy and low while the ships were sunk by dive bombers:

How many cv's were sunk by airborne launched torpedoes in WW2? +)


Think it takes 3-4 torps to sink the CV in AH

British Navy lost I believe the Repulse (could be wrong on name) to a combination of torp & bombs.

IT was pretty much zigging & zagging, dodgeing bombs pretty well till a torp smacked it in the rear taking out 1 screw & locking the rudder full over.

With half speed gone & steaming in a predictable circle needless to say it didn't take long.

British Fairy Swordfish had torpedeos hit the Bismarck also. Again helping to bring about its destruction.

Hvy ships especially had armor plate up to 10 " thick down to the waterline, and on the decks. But a single torpedeo below the waterline could do some serious damage.

In AH the best way to take out a carrier is divebombing... torpedo's are pretty useless.  

Of course, the "best" way to divebomb is to dive a Lancaster into the CV deck.

The Bismark was sunk in a combination of aerial torpedo attacks and a naval pursuit.

Another example is the Taranto attack, the Italians barely managed to project any power out at sea after that attack by Swordfish torpedo bombers at the dead of night in their harbour.

The American torpedos were the only ones that didn't work :)
Towards the end of the war a better model was introduced that wroked better.

Japanese perfected the Torp run really well.

japanese torpedos where very effective.
They where oxygendriven and could be setup at 3 ranges.
and 3 speeds (type 93).

50,40 and 32 knots running 22000, 35000 and 44000 yards.
thanks to the oxygen u didn't see em coming.

At the early stage of war the allies didn't know about em and when the sea battle at the java sea was running the allies thought they dealt with submarines .

But i'm talking about ship torpedos now
