The Army should tell its troops to start using Iraqi Defense Force weapons.  "never been fired, only been droped once"  :aok

LOL

Pima County Police reports I used to live all the way down Ina in Picture Rocks

6 - A man reported that he was assaulted at a stoplight at North Oracle and West Ina roads at 3:27 p.m. April 26. He told deputies a man who was also stopped at the light got out of his truck, walked up to his car and slapped him on the head before he could roll up his window. :rofl

Gunslinger, that seems to be what someone are doing. This was already on news six months ago but anyway...

http://www.occupationwatch.org/article.php?id=616

"Some soldiers also say it's easier to get ammo for the AK they can pick it up on any raid or from any confiscated weapon.

''It's plentiful,'' said Sgt. Eric Harmon, a tanker who has a full 75-round drum, five 30-round magazines, plus 200-300 rounds in boxes for his AK. He has about 120 rounds for his M16."

Why bother bringing their own ammo over seas when they can borrow them from every house in Iraq :D

Bad idea to start using enemy weapons...any soldier OTG in Iraq should be able to tell the diff between AK and M-16...would you want to "sound" like an Iraqi firing a weapon right now? I wouldn't

my 2 cents...

Not to mention without a thourough inspection you cannot tell the condition of the weapon itself.  That next shot you take may blow up in your face.

In Vietnam some US soldiers used the AK47.  Not unheard of.

that's true though but they have confiscated numerious rifles in Iraq that should never be fired in their current condiditon.  Not to mention I think its against current regulations.  Not that those allways get followed in the field

It is NOT against regulations to use captured enemy equipment, it is common practice the world over.  With the exception of ensuring every battle rifle they confiscate is safe, and the ammo (we had a penchant for loading VC ammo with plastique so it would explode when fired) is safe too, it may make sense to allow men and women in field a choice, BUT, gunslinger did point out that the AK is VERY distinctive in sound, as is the 16.  Those sounds make a lot of difference when heard in combat.  Lastly, the 16 fires farther (not a big deal in street fighting), is more accurate, and is less prone to barrel degradation in prolonged firing.

Make more damn ammo.

Ohh, and the most common weapon being picked up over there is the AK-74 NOT the 47.

I dont think the US Military is running out of bullets so to speak. lol. Its current demand it seems cannot be met by its current supplier.

So as we did in WW2, we are farming work out to other companies.

This is really nothing to be concerned about. During WW2 there were probably 12 companies (I should really know the exact # but its still early here) making 1911 govn't 45's building them on government contracts. And that was just for one pistol.

I dont think this is anything to be concerned about. I think its good for business really.

Bodhi I'm pretty sure you are wrong.  I dont have time to do research but I'm almost posative there is standing orders against using NON-US weapons...at least on a regular basis.  I you have to pick on up in a pinch sure.  But, I don't think the Army lets its soldiers  use AKs as a "standard" weapon.

Having fired both, and owning an AK-74 as well as firing the 16, I would prefer to the 74 in urban fighting.  Rarely jams, and it sounds oh so cool.  Plus you get a kick bellybutton head dress when you pick one up over there.  :aok

I would like to see what you find, but I remember a specific training unit as late as last year carrying assorted and "different" weapons and thats what they planned to take into the field with them when they got overseas.
