How common was using of the MW50 system on Eastern Front ? Luftflotte 6 I think. Autumn '44.

Why Im asking: Just ve read nice interview of the soviet La-5FN, 7 pilot. The most interesting thing was that he was able to catch german planes (109G, 190A) in level flight. With cockpit of his plane open and bombracks installed.

I don't think any 190A used MW50. The 109G-14, G-10 and K-4 used MW50.

Im asking mostly about 109. As for 190 - pilot said - only 190D had same speed as La-5FN.

And I know that 109G10, 14, K were equiped w. MW50. Im asking about availability of it on the EF. Or about usage of this system. La-5FN w. open cockpit and w. bombracks could catch 109G wo MW50. But I cant undestand how it can catch 109 which using MW50.

No they didnt.... A few oddball A4s may have had mw50 and were used in fast jabo raid againts England. However this remains "mysterious".

The A4 came from the factory with "plumbing" in place (MW50 was a BMW invention) for mw50 but there were numerous problems. C3- injection was tested on the a5 and serialized on the A-8. No A series 190 used mw50.

MW50 wasn't widely used until 1944....

However in 1944-45 I don't see any problem with availability of MW50 on the Eastern Front. It's just water and alcohol ... hardly difficult to come by on the EF!

Maybe Butch or someone with more knowledge can offer a definitive answer but it would seem to me that in the west and for RVT duties the need for hi alt performance would mean the most of the AS eng G's, G10s and K4s would be needed there and in the east the G14s and G8s from the NAGr groups would be needed.

However, JG 54 was flying mostly 190s from A6s to A9s and Fs.

In fact i some case there was ashortage of methanol, which resulted in lower methanol content (MW-30) or ethanol being used instead (EW-50).
All in all boost fluid was available, and necessary in some cases since a lot of 109 units were running on B4 fuel rather than C3.

Batz is correct about the a few 190A4's with the MW 50 plumbing but the 190A5 was the first Wurger produced that came with MW50 standard.

Osprey has a great book "190 Aces of the Eastern Front". The 190 was in high demand on all fronts. On the Eastern Front it did extremely well. The 190F became the ground attack fighter of choice and the low altitude dogfights fit well with the 190's strengths.

Unfortunately for the Jagdflieger on the Ostfront, the defense of the Reich took priority in 190 production allocation. After all the Eastern Front was considered the "easy" front by the Luftwaffe. The only Russian fighter I recall any mention of as a "watch out for this one" is the Yak-3.

GM-1 was experimented with extensively on the 190's but my sources say it was difficult to adapt to the BMW-801C/D series and was not used until the 190A6 on any production varients. MW-50 was the more common boost system for the 190 and was used on production aircraft begining with the 190A5 series.

I know for a fact mw50 wasnt used on 190 As with the exception of the a4s I mentioned above.

GM1 is completely irrelevent to the discussion.

The a4s in question didnt have mw50 as "standard". No A series 190 had mw50 as "standard".

190a8s and a9s had c3 injection....
