Ran over a moose in the ambulance
« on: June 08, 2004, 11:26:27 AM »
I was taking a transfer from Salmon Id, back to Missoula, Mt, was about 1 am and I was about 30 miles north of Salmon when the truck in front of me slammed on his brakes and the rear end jumped into the air.  Before I could do anything there he was, a full grown bull moose lying in the middle of my lane.  My partner was standing up working on his patient so I couldn't slam on the brakes with out throwing him into the front wall of the box, so I just straddled it.  Even though the ambulance weighs 15,000lbs and is a F-350 truck front end with a 12ft box on the back (4x4) it was still quite a ride, lifted the rear end off the ground.  I spent the next day lying on the ground with the pressure washer getting chunks of meat and hair out from under the rig.

Anyone ever tried smoked moose? It's great...but I suggest you not tenderize the meat with a vehicle... :)

Maybe the moose was laying in the road as a passive form of protest for the oppression of his moose brothers by the military-industrial-ambulance complex.

This moose secretly worked for Halliburton's ambulance repair subsidiary. Cheney gets a kickback on repairs of course, so he had Boooooossssh force the moose out on to the road at gunpoint.

You are lucky you weren't killed. You could have easily ground looped. I've seen it on T.J. Hooker.

Heh you lucky it was already down...

I've seen what a standing moose can do when hit at highway speeds...

a couple years back I hit a 6 mo old elk calf in a ford escort doing about 85mph.  was a very intense couple of seconds.

luckily he was already down and laying more or less straight across the road.  it was best described as a meat-ramp.  all four left the road.

surprisingly the car was in great condition afterward.  it tweaked the sway-bar a little bit but the alignment was still good, and it actually cleared up a little vibration that was developing up font.

the only damage was the handle above the passenger door was ripped off, and a lot of coffee stains, thanks to a passenger who was just starting to nod off as we hit.

how'd your partner come out of the moose incedent?  I can't imagine standing up for a ride like that.
