This is a carry-over from the other thread.

Just wanted to know how everyone felt about the practice to decrease the desireablity of martyrdom. The Israelis were toying with the idea of hanging bags of pork fat in busses to dissuade potential suicide bombers from setting off explosions, inevitably bathing their own body parts in the substance which they hate.

There were also rumors of the Russian government burying the Chechen terrorists responsible for the Moscow Theater Hostage crisis in pig skin.

The idea is to deny them entry into heaven, since that's the driving force behind the actions of those who actually commit the actions.

much of the abuse in abu GaRuB prison was to shame the religious sensibilities of suspect muslims. The idea of burying these terrorist scumbags in pigskin or bathing their bodies in pigblood appeals to me. Im all for it. Shame those rotten bastards into hell.

You guys make an assumption here, ie: the suicide bombers really believe that "72 virgins" stuff.

Has the Israeli "pig fat" idea actually decreased the rate of bus bombings? I sure don't now.

However, if they're not sending their "best and brightest" to do the suicide bombing... and I suspect they send their slowest, dumbest and most mentally challenged (or maybe they have in flagrante delicto pictures of them with the"Pigboy Sow of the Month" if you catch my drift).... then this idea may not work.

I'm pretty sure that if they believe their god will reward them for the murder of infidels, then they could probably be convinced he will forgive them for being painted in pig parts postmortem.

Well im not sure about the pigfat in the bus thing. I mean after we capture them dead or alive. Either pour pig blood on them or bury them with pigs, and that would maybe be a way of making them think twice... maybe

First off, I don't think the Israelis ever went through with the Pig Fat idea because for one thing, devout Jews aren't too fond of the substance either.

Secondly, I really don't think it takes an Islamic scholar to believe in this concept--quite the contrary, actually. Anyone enthused by the idea of giving their life is clearly hoping for something better on the other side, because why do it if all you're gonna get is dead? If they're indoctrinated enough to be so certain of paradise(the 72 virgins is but one interpretation of the concept of heaven, and not widely accepted. Heaven, on the other hand, is universal to any Muslim), which, again, doesn't require brains so much as blind devotion, then they're probably also familiar with the hatred and fear of pork products--which quite basic in Islam.

I think it's incorrect to assume religion is either the sole or primary motivator.

There've been "suiciders" in many conflicts. The Japanese in WW2 for example. There were US pilots that dove into targets. IIRC, Doolittle told his raiders that he would do that if it became apparent he wasn't going to be able to keep flying.

This idea might slow some of them down. Maybe. But today I saw a Moslem girl in traditional dress working behind the deli counter at the grocery. She was manually piling up the smoked ham for a customer. Was it the little latex glove that allowed this? What if it tore or slipped?

I'm sorry, I'm just unconvinced.

I am convinced of this, however. The world outcry over the US using the pig parts as shields would be fun to watch.

These fanatics believe that infidels can do nothing to keep them out of paradise. So there would be no deterent effect from a policy like this.
