Was I wrong?
« on: June 21, 2004, 02:40:56 PM »
Well, heck, shoot me for being a crab now and then.

Getsome was complaining he couldn't see GV's, so I gave him a quick rundown on the sliders on range channel. Whole thing took maybe 5 exchanges and less than 30 seconds. Then Cobraeye gets on and tells us in sort of a snotty way to knock it off on range, cause him and his squad cant communicate over our little convo. Him and the one other Gravedigger that was on.

Quote, with thinly veiled putoutedness,  "Please keep the range channel chatter to a minimum now, because I can't talk to my squad, you keep interrupting us."

So I kind of chewed him out back, being tired of the little general syndrome so prevalent these days.

Can range be squelched somehow?

Anyway, I took considerable offense to that guy having an annoynism, sorry.

That's why there's a squad channel.  You should have started talking about the weather, rather than get offended.

Range channel shouldn't be used as a gen. chat channel.

You could have just asked the guy to tune to channel xxx and then you could have taken time to answer his questions there.

There's a lot of pointless chatter over range and for those of us who fly with our squads some it inteferes with our communications.

I started another thread asking that squad/tuned channels be biased over range.

But if you must have a conversion then just tuning to a private channel is not to much to ask.

So yeah, you were out of line. It has nothing to do with "generals" or squelching range. Consider the fact that others around you cant communicate if theres a lot of chatter on range. Just tune to private channel.

So in the middle of furball island, I'm supposed to auger and then help out Getsome so he could get a vis on the GV that was pounding him because of his video settings. I don't think that's "pointless chatter" or "general chat" nor is it a "conversation". Especially since many people are in a learning mode right now.

Let me rephrase my earlier statement a little, over thirty seconds time, we had 5 personal exchanges, the first one being a general request for assistance, probably totalling less than 10 seconds talk time.

Getsome: I can't see this tank firing at me!
KJ714: What are your video slider settings? I had that problem.
Getsome: Mine are all to the right.
KJ714: Move 'em to the left, you'll see the GV.
Getsome: Thanks
Getsome: It worked!

Get real, man. I fly with my squad 90% of the time and we get the same interference, can't recall anybody getting too upset.
I thought we were supposed to help each other out in the game? Oh, that's a different situation, I guess.

You did the right thing in helping. That squad should know they have their own private vox.

Sorry Cobraeye.

So you didnt really want an answer to your question. You just wanted some one to pat you on the head and say "You go girl"...

To change vox channel you just type .radio 5 XXX or just type it in.

How hard is that?

I don't care how upset you are. Range channel has to much pointless chatter. You asked for an opinion and you got one.

No, the only way to do it is to squelch every one individually that shows up in the vox box on range. But as more folks come into range they are not squelched.

HT has said before that he doesnt want to  range to be squelched.

Pretty hard when you're zooming up out of the furball trying to stay alive and get back in. Much easier just to throw it over range quick like. Even though it wasn't the best timed moment, I fight with Getsome quite a bit, didn't want to leave him stranded like that. Nobody else was offering anything to the poor guy.

I not looking for anyone to do anything, jack. Don't patronize me.
Just wanted to get a feel for the water how other people felt about the subject. I'm sorry I griped (on text channel) at the noob, if it was a more seasoned player I probably wouldn't be, just because he's new, at least I think so, because of his ranking time in the game. Who knows, maybe it's some crusty sourlip who just changed his handle around.

Your opinion is noted, so far it's at least 3 to 1 against you. You seem to be the only one who missed the fact it wasn't "general chat", it was game oriented and PDQ. Tell me, what is acceptable range material to you?

This is true.
I think maybe we should make a request to have this reversed.
All in all he did the right thing. It was quick, to the point And had something to do with the battle at hand.
Typing might have been better but there isnt always time for that.
The  real problem comes when your in a heavy combat area and when two people who seemingly havent seen each other since kindergarden decide to catch up on the last 20 years  and hog the range channel altogether with extended conversation none of which has anything to do withthe local combat situation. thus blocking anyone else from getting a word in edgewise with what might be important information. Like the 3 goons trying to sneak in from the north.

It's time like these that I call Silat over to where I'm flying and tell him to sing on range vox.

With every post you give more details, none which have anything to do with the original question:

"Was I wrong...to get uppity at the guy for asking me to not use range as a conversation channel...?"

My reply is, "Yes you were wrong".

Beyond that I don’t care much about what you were talking about. My point in general is that range channel chatter (of which your 30 sec or whatever contributes) is out of hand.

That guy is probably frustrated by the constant hen clucking that goes on. It does affect folks who are trying to communicate with their friends and squad mates and who care nothing about whatever it is you were going on about.

You can be upset all you want but I would have asked you to shut up as well.

But you go girl...

There, you feel better?

Patronize you? You ran to the bbs "mommy" for validation. You get whats called for...
