Pepper spray
« on: June 23, 2004, 09:43:10 PM »
As part of my police training, I got a one second stream of OC/CS spray in the face tonight.

Holy crap.

Talk about pain.  The first five seconds you just sit there and say "Hey, this isn't so bad."  Then it hits.  For about five minutes, it was all I could do to force myself to breathe.  Gasping, coughing, nose filled with snot, eyes slammed shut and excruciating pain each time I tried to open them.  I remember thinking that if I just passed out, I'd go back to breathing normally and the pain would be gone when I woke up.  We were quickly escorted inside, where we spent about 10 minutes in front of sinks trying to cool our faces and wash the burning sensation away.  After about 15 minutes I could keep my eyes open and function pretty much normally, although my face still burned for another 15 minutes or so.

Now I'm sitting here, scared to take a shower for fear of washing some more of the stuff out of my hair and into my eyes/nose/mouth/face/peehole.  Supposedly it'll evaporate after about 12 hours, so I'm thinking I'll go to sleep and take a shower in the morning.

Yeah, it really sucks.

Anybody else ever been on the wrong side of this nasty stuff?

When I went through my own training, I got a similar shot of it (it is required training to be able to carry it on duty in Ohio).

Nothing beyond minor irritation happened for awhile because I took somebody's advice and DID NOT BLINK (supposedly blinking stirs it around the eyes more)....but when it hit me...it hit me.

10 minutes after I got sprayed it finally hit me....essentially as Tarmac described.  Yes I made a bad mistake and blinked a few times...OMG bad idea!   The skin discomfort (strong burning feeling describes it well) is mild compared to the pain in the EYES....it feels like you are having nails driven through your eyes.  AND THERE'S NOTHING YOU CAN DO except wait.

The former US army/marine guys in the academy all agreed it was better to go through tear gas training than the OC spray.

Honestly it wasn't that bad.  Yeah it hurts but it is only pain...no actual damage.  I'd do it again  :)  Except I'd bring an older shirt....it turns your nose into a snot factory, lol.  It was sort of fun listening to everyone use their choice explectives in turn.

Me being the pragmatic sort of guy I am I then went and washed my face off with alcohol pads rather than water.  Surprisingly it didn't make it hurt any worse (nobody would believe me on this), and I think it spared me later as I had no issues with it "re-activating" when I washed up at home.

Tarmac--

I advise against taking a shower in the morning, unless you like pain.  If you do take one, try to avoid getting your face wet.  I recommend taking a washcloth and washing your face off in the morning very carefully, taking great care to avoid the area around your eyes.  Several of my academy mates were still having issues with it even a couple days later.

I always carry Pepper Spray when armed.  Given the chance, I'd rather use that than my Glock.

LMAO .. been there..

buddy is a police auxillary. we were at a drunken food binge at country kitchen about 2 AM one night. we waited about 45 minutes for a table LOL. there were 10 of us

he ordered an omlet. got feeling the need for spicy, so he pulled out his OC.

spritzed the omlet for a millisecond.

he made 1/2 our table get up, and 3 other booths leave the resturant fully LOL.

we were threatened to be removed until we bribed the waitress with $10 (man those chicks will do anything for a buck).
I don't know what to put here yet.

Tarmac,

Will you need to go through a second one?  My younger brother went through police training and they had to get it twice.  First was a get used to it experience and the second they were required to takedown and handcuff the "bad guy" after being sprayed.

I've gotten a whiff of old-fashioned tear gas before.  Ick.

I just finished up a case where a probationer hadn't been acting good and the probation office called in a local PD to help them get this guy.

Well, they got in the trailer, but he barricaded himself in the john.  So they got the bright idea to squirt OC under the door.  So now he's in there with a wet towel wrapped around his head and the trailer is filling with OC spray.  Lots of fun.  Finally they get in the john and for a second he thinks about resisting...I guess until he realized how pissed they were to be sucking in their own OC spray.

BTW, if you ever get in trouble with an officer who has one of those cool tazer guns, don't piss him off.  They will zap the bejesus out of you in a heartbeat.  Then they write in their reports, "The suspect came at me in a menacing fashion.  I warned him to lie down and he refused.  Next he advanced towards me again with his hands raised saying '**** you, I'm not doing ****'.  At that point I deployed by X18 (whatever it is) Tazer.  I waited until the red dot appeared on his chest and activated it.  One bard hit him in the lower abdemon and the other in the right pectoral.  Upon pressing the stud, the suspect 'planked' (they love that term...police-speak for he went really rigid) and fell down.  After 5 seconds I release the stud."

I took a little of my wifes when she moved back to Germany. Sprayed it into old 3 liter took a little bit on my finger just to see what it did dabbed it in my eye. Said this aint doing crap, 2 secs later "fire! it burns!" I fall to floor "it burns! it burns! sweet mother of mercy! it burns.!"for ten minutes repeating that and feebly rolling around.,and my buddy is laughing his arse off, like I would. Later that day everything is better, memories of hte pain still make me shudder, Then my brother comes home, 20 minutes later from his room"AAAARRRRrgghhh It burns! my eyes my eyes!! screeech!" 18 y/o man screaming like a little girl. I carry pepper spray all the time now. Its more fun then just simply shooting a criminal.

I remember when someone round these here parts shot a can of pepperspray.

He was shirtless, I seem to recall.
