Brazos:

"N1 is an expert's plane. Compresses quickly, so B&Z work is tricky. Doesn't turn or climb well, so escape from a bad pass is tuff."

Where do you get this information?  From another video game?

The (real life) combat accounts I've read say that the George could out turn and outclimb anything the US had, and at low levels it was damn fast.  There are several stories of Hellcats being absolutely smoked by Georges.

Wingloading (35 lb/ft^2) and powerloading (4.4 lb/hp) are better than anything but an F8F Bearcat.  Hellcat, Corsair, Mustang aren't even close.

And the automatic maneuver flaps should allow it to turn better than the clean wingloading suggests.

This is not a plane that P-51D, F4U, or F6F should succeed against in a knife fight.

It's a great good choice as an opponent to the Spit 9, P-51D, La-5FN, Me 109G-10, Fw 190A-8.  Not one of these planes will be at a serious disadvantage.

Ki-61 or A6M would be useful only in the hands of an expert against the above competition.

Note:  The George has the same Homare engine as the Ki-84, which was notoriously unreliable.  There were a lot of breakdowns, and the rated 1990 hp wasn't usually attainable.  I've heard a couple of reports that in service these planes weren't that fast.

A better choice might be the Ki-44.  It used  a more reliable Nakajima Ha-109, and in the field was probably the fastest Japanese figher.  It was a better climber than the George, and had great high-speed maneuverability.

funked, brazos is talking about his experience with the N1K2 in Airwarrior. But even then I would disagree with him on most points but the fact that its an experten plane. Because you see a long time ago I was one of the few FR dedicated Niki pilots.

In my opinon your assesment of the George is much more accurate.

Under 10k it is very fast with only the Pony or maybe the Dora being faster (But it accelerates faster, oftening winning tail chases). From 15k-20k its still as fast as F4U-1's and others of that class. But its performance falls off rapidly over 20K.

Its greatest advantage is that it has one of the fastest acceleration rates of the era (at least in AW) which coupled with its manueverability can often lead to blackouts and redouts.

However its high speed handling is poor, similar to the Spit XIV in WB's.

It climbs like a cat with its tail on fire, being only slightly slower than a Spit IX in climb rate.

Instantaneous maneuverability is excellent in the slow to medium speed ranges, and the automatic butterfly flaps are a godsend. However it is not a TnB aircraft in that it tends to bleed E like a stuck pig in a sustained turn. So much more than 480 degrees' and you better be putting the nose down to grab some speed.

Basically its a extremely good E fighter, and should be fought in the vertical like a 109F,P-38, or Yak-3.

Probably the closest comparison in WB's would be the Yak3. Fast, manuverable, and deadly in the vert.

I can't wait to see how Pyro's N1K2 turns out.

Don't think so Curly.

I think this one had pilot armor and self-sealers.

One thing they're not gonna model is the fact that the initial Nik had terrible engine problems.  Evidently that was its main problem.

This aircraft was VERY deadly though.  If the war had dragged on, it could have had some impact.  Wait ... no it wouldn't.  I'd take a Bearcat or Tigercat against a Nik anyday.

Just goes to show... you bring a bat, i'll bring a gun ...

Go U.S.!

Thx Vermillion

Curly - Wolverine is right, the George had armor and self-sealing tanks.  Actually I was just reading an account this weekend where some Hellcats shot up a plane they thought was a Zeke, but it wouldn't blow up.  They were confused until they figured out it was a George!
