Free Warbirds?
« on: October 15, 1999, 10:14:00 PM »
iEN (or whatever their name is this week) has a free "Warbirds" weekend promo going on. So I figured what the hell I`ll sign up and club some seals. Well I enter the arena and first thing I see is the fact that you can only fly four planes out of the 50 or so modeled. O.K.-whatever,then I grab a 190D and type .fly and I`m in the air (bogus air start)   Then I notice the unmistakable STENCH of the "RR" mode, exit and check set-up,yep easy flight unchecked. Well I hate to say it but Warbirds just became a casualty of the delete command-over 300 mb of previous versions,utilitys,add-ons,sound files etc. WTF?,I remember when I used to fly and practice offline every day even before I had an account. Back in early 97 when I built my first PC and got on the internet I did a search and found Warbirds, downloaded and became a fan of the best simulation I had ever seen. Then IMOL ran a promo weekend (full plane set and full realism flight model) and I became a fanatic,ate-drank and dreamed Warbirds. Told everyone I knew about it and hooked dozens more with my enthusiasm for it. Then the unthinkable occurred, the founders left after being bought out by a bunch of businessmen? These so-called businessmen have steadily destroyed what was the finest WW2 simulation on the internet and dont deserve the honor of owning/managing this software.I guess what I`m saying is why have this promo when all your giving is a piece of toejam-dumbed down flight model that nobody will be interested in flying-much less paying for. I fail to see the "hook" in this policy. At any rate I would just like to say thank you to Pyro and Hitech and the rest of the original crew who brought us so much entertainment with Warbirds and now Aces High, keep up the good work guys-your the best!

Weasel, that so about WB's? Guess I will put in some time. Thx. About business men, they respond to the majority or the most vocal, as does government and like the upper class in France during the rebellion, you are out numbered by the uneducated and inexperienced.

I think WB's is better than ever.  Still expensive, still the best there is for now.

But what do I know.

It's interesting to hear the view some have regarding the cost of on-line flying these days.  :-)

I remember flying a multiplayer WWII sim back in 1992 before the internet was used for such things.  I connected to a service called "GEnie" through Canada's DataPac service to partake in the exciting world of "AirWarrior" ... that state-of-the-art sim cost me an hourly rate of $10.00.  Yes, per hour of connection time from dial in.

It was a real party back then, the persona of bandits such as; Blue Baron, Hitech, Centurion, Killer, Pyro, V, DoKtOr GoNzO, Rabid, Grok, Frying Tiger, Hardrock, DeadDuck, Caligula, Psyco, JJ, Snail, Vortex, Mud ... well I could go on all night with handles.  Anyone else care to add more to the above list?  :-)

Anyways, thanks too HiTech, V Film came along and some time later, Warbirds.  Eight years ago I got one hour of fun for the same price as five hours now.  Hang in there Cabby, it'll get cheaper for you too.  ;^)

Weazel,
easy mode is forced to avoid MA vets like you to seal clubbing newbies
Better look for real opponents.

Hey Surfer you bandit!  Yes, long time bud, how you doing sir?  Your right about Moggs and you, I started remembering who was there and just figured I best stop posting handles before I started another flame war.  :-)

I'd love to CO another Scenario Surfer, would be a bloody pleasure now days with all these new features to play with.  I'll attempt to do that the next time the Luftwaffe are possitioned here for a scenario battle ... hope you can give me a hand with it if I'm picked to CO one.  We had some of the best scenario experiences back there in AW, hopefully AH supports what the GM's need to make them work!

Sad truth is, you gotta provide for the Realaxed Realism dweebs so the game providers like HiTech will be able to afford to provide the full realism minority with a place to fly.

I tried to fly in the free arena this weekend and it didn't take long to remember why I left WB in the first place.

It took forever to get in (bad conx) and when I DID get in all I heard was how everyone was a dweeb for flying this or that and how people were stealing kills and so on. Loads of fun! NOT!!

Hey Veljanov you don't have to worry about us Seals .. we've learned how to club back.

Surfer choked out:

Ubetcha Drum...I'd be honored to work within your command structure. This is the stuff that I'm looking forward too the most.

BTW, I'm seeing some serious aces logging AH now. The quality of the pilots is rapidly increasing as is the related lethality of the resultant environment. The last few nights I've been having a friggin blast. It's great to see Fats, Udie, Garn and the gang. For me, that speaks volumes about AH's potential.

Count me in Drum! Salute!
