Here's a sad story from the US.  I moved into a nice neighborhood 15 years ago.  It was so safe I used to leave my car parked with the windows rolled down, and leave my front door open to let fresh air in through the screen door at night.  Then it went to hell after the government started subsidizing rent in the area.  By the time I moved out I was locking my front door even during the daytime when I was home, and I had a loaded shotgun leaning against the livingroom wall.

There are plenty of places in the US where it is safe to leave your doors unlocked.  Just hope the government doesn't find out about them.

yep ra... the section 8 zombies have made me lock my doors too.  they live in houses that people who work for a living can't afford to rent.   I was told that if I rented to them, joined the "program" I would be paid my rent by the program like clockwork and could rais rents any reasonable amount (some have raised rents 50% over mine) I was told that any damage (there is allways massive damage) will be cheerfuly paid for by the "program".

I told em to shove it.

Way to go.  I could have taken the same offer, but I chose to sell the house instead.  The buyer will probably end up renting it out to the program.  I'm just glad to be out of that failed socialist experiment of a neighborhood.

It was a real heartbreak to watch some of the struggling familiies forced to move out of the neighborhood for their kids' sake.  All they had was a decent house in a decent neighborhood, and the government took that away in the name of fairness.   No wonder the Dem pols are having a tough time holding on the their jobs.

so nash... you are saying that all of vancouvers problems are drug related?   If so... I would think that people in vancouver would need to be able to defend themselves against the zombies no?

Druggies are criminals in the purest sense.. they will do $1000 dollars (real dollars not canadian money) to your property to get $10 for drugs... they will commit violence against you and each other and... minorities see drugs as a way to get ahead... they form gangs.

How would you solve all this?

I don't claim to be able to solve it but... I would like the ability to defend myself against it until someone comes up with an answer.

and... I certainly have no interest in living in a big city.

Igloos have doors that lock?

What is the point?  You could just melt a hole with a lighter and reach through and unlock it.

:p

Section 8 rents ruined my home town, but the people who participate are getting wealthy buying up property and either converting to ALF or section 8 rents.  We moved out to the everglades about ten years ago.  you can leave your doors unlocked and the keys in your car.

I never lock my igloo...mind you, I have one of those machines that throws baseballs aimed at the entrance.... but I don't use baseballs; I have a stockpile of icey snowballs to pummell any intruder. So far, it's been very effective.

Was a pretty assinine thing about Bowling for Columbine in my opinion.  Not the only one.  When we leave our house we lock it. When we go to sleep we lock it. The only time its locked when we are there is by mistake.

I cant imagine it is any different in a US town of the same size(300k) and the same demographic.
But moore of course doenst want to talk about that.

That is the worst thing about Columbine..it discredits F 9/11. People have seen the one and knew it was dishonest, so who can blame them for not seeing the new one to decide if it is dishonest.

Moore wasn't talking about some small town...he came to TO and opened doors...this is a multi-cultural city of between 4-5 million people (we've had concerts here bigger than 300k people)

Do that around here near Detroit.  Heck, in July of 2001, I cryed until my stomach ached, had to be 15 minutes of uninterrupted laughter at work.  What was so funny?  Three guys jacked up a garage near Detroit City Airport.  Why, to steal the Aluminum siding, they had it LITERALLYon a Pickup truck bed, but it got caught on the curb and they left it in the middle of the street. (I kept the link for ages and it now gone).

Found a link after posting, no pics on this one.

hmmm...pongo I don't know; I wouldn't even know what criteria to use to even make a guess

I can't ever remember anyone ever locking their door behind me when I visisted them. The exception may be if someone lives in a condo. It's very easy to get off on the wrong floor and walk into the wrong unit. I've done that and had it happen to me.
