Heh, she wasn't the only instructor, or even the main one. She's a member of an Explorer Post in that area. She really knew her stuff, too. She appeared used to the boys' awkwardness around her. Seemed to amuse her, somewhat.

Hehe I had done exactly the same thing with repellent aerosole on brezent (hard cotton) Army tents where we lived in one of the summer camps :D
