One of my A/C units took a dump today. Basically the compressor psig is about = for the low and the high side. So the compressor is about shot. This unit is a Lennox but is about 30 yrs old. The side of the house that it services are 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The area is roughly 1320 sqft. The house has an Eastern exposure with lots of windows. In terms of the sqft alone it calls for about a 2.5 ton unit but am considering a 3.5 ton unit to account for the amount of sunlight coming through the many windows.
When we remodeled in 1999 we replaced the unit that services the other side of the house. upon recommendations from friends we used a janitrol unit but I'm not happy with the performance. Great warranty and the repairs are at no cost to me but I would rather try another mfg.
Any A/C type dudes willing to educate me a little bit? I will probably perform the changeout myself. The existing unit is a package unit with oven under ducting and the plenum is partly outside of the perimeter walls of the house.
