Nips? Now tell me you wouldn't smile saying that.

That's a truncation of Nipponese, i.e., Japanese.

In a war, opponents are often called derogatory terms.
Even then, truncated abbreviations of longer legitimate terms are probably the least offensive.

In peacetime, makes no sense to call anyone anything they don't like.

Why does it make sense to call someone something they don't like in war?  Well.  Unless you're fostering hate, which has been done.  Personally I'd rather kill the poor bastard and go home; no time to hate him, too.

Point of order. Not a single person in this thread has been actually singled out and called a "Jap", "Kraut", "Nip", "Yank", "Wank", "Ruskie", "Commie", "Canuck", "Chowderhead", "Poopyhead, "Jerry", "Imperialist pig" or "Gay Supremacist." So far. :D

The topic has been discussed before, therefore I'd rather not re-open the issue for myself as it provokes emotions which I'd rather not display in public again.  I am offering you an offline discussion

BTW, the abbreviation for Japan in the Olympics is JPN according to the International Standards Organization.

edit:
btw, let's not highjack this thread.

I'd never heard the reason why KFC changed its name, that's quite interesting.  Still, KFC stands for you-know-what.

I'm really stumped as to the passions of this one little abbreviated word.  That's all it is, an abbreviation.  But if we want to go overboard with the PC, we need to call "Americans"...oops, "US citizens" what they correctly are too.  Also, try and type the word with the correct tone or inflection because people have really become quite sensitive and we don't want anyone crying on the BBS.  America is a continent and "Americans" cover quite a lot of peoples from varying countries.  So since we all have to be so formal and afraid of everyone's feelings, we need to be clear in that it's USN/USAF/USMC for a reason and substitute the often used "American" with "US citizen" or "US warplane."  Woops, "US" is an acronym and we can clearly see how people get ticked off by not being so formal so it has to be "United States citizen" or "United States warplane."  I would think it fair that all plane-sets or campaigns are correct and messages on the BBS heretofore show proper respect.  I know this is silly, but I also think this entire thing is ridiculous.  "Jap" is an abbreviation and no more.  But I'll be watching!

However, I did learn today that Yankee is actually and originally a derogatory term.  According to my dictionary, it was originally a derogatory term for Hollanders and Dutch and later the Dutch in New York started calling English settlers in Connecticut "Yankees" as a derogatory term.  So there you have it, it actually is a bad no-no wash-your-mouth-out-with-soap word and the hammer should fall swift and heavy on anyone who uses it.  In contrast, "Jap" is just an abbreviation.  Uh ohh, now I know I can't go to the AH Con...Yankee is gonna beat me up!

You could put a period after "Jap." if you wanted to use it as an abbreviation...
