That is what I thought.  I guess it all depends on what context you use it in.  I got an online buddy that says it is not considered derogatory.

General consinious on other forums is that is considered deragatory, since it was used in that context during the war, and by those from that generation, the term "Jap" is a racest slur, used well before the war in such a maner and intensifed in it's use and negativaty during the war by Govement propaganda.

It's unacceptable because of it getting blown out of proportion by NON-Japs .... this thread being a wonderful example. :D

Being constantly labeled a canuck by my fellow Americans, I beg to offer some solice to those who think some country id terms are all slang... it's in the context.

"Hey, I heard Forskter's a Canuck."  That's a country identifier.

"Forks' just a canuck".  It's a negative connotation, that will ususally get a nasty glare.

"Stupid canuck" in a bar will get the shirt/jacket-pulled-over-your-head hockey fight style. :D

Understand the context, but still illogical for any truncation of an acceptable official name to be considered derogatory.

Then again, Amers isn't very appealing.

Germans probably wouldn't want to be called Germs.

Or Brazilians Bras.

Or Chileans Chils.

Or New Zealanders Zeals.

Or Canadians Cans.

Or Chinese Chins.

Safe thing is to call people what they call themselves.  And then smile when ya say that, pardner.
