Skuzzy or Hitech Please???
« on: July 17, 2004, 12:54:45 PM »
Am I the only one whom wishes to try the advertised option to preload textures to video memory?  I am sure thre are others with 256MB cards. The option is greyed out and I have 200 MB free video memory.  It worked great with system memory with slightly lower FPS.

Try disabling AA or AF and select lower quality settings may help to enable the option.

I believe the option to preload is to sys mem and not vid mem.
Looks as though you will need 512Mbs+, pref 1Gb sys mem
AMD Phenom II X6 1100T
Asus M3N-HT mobo
2 x 2Gb Corsair 1066 DDR2 memory

Thanks for the reply Kev,
BUT it seems like I am one of the few who read the Patch 6 notes, HeHe -

"Note: There is also an option to preload textures to video memory. This option will not be available to you if you do not have sufficient video memory."  from-
http://www.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=123930

As I posted: I have 200MB free VIDEO memory while online. I do have a gig of system RAM and still had bout 400MB remaining with the textures loaded to system RAM.   The greyed out option only appears when I click on the Video Options tab of the clipboard when AH launches.  It doesn't appear at all under video options once in the game.

Cav,
I haven't tried that yet but will do so just out of curiosisty.  I would have thought that 200MB free would be enough, and it wouldn't really be worth reducing video quality since the other option works fine.  Have you heard of anyone having the option enabled?

Actually i seem to recall HT telling somebody last night to not use the system memory option if you wish to use the vidcard option, did you try this ?

It was also said that for example if you had a 128mb card and wanted to use the vid mem option it would only be possible if you did not use AA otherwise it would be grayed out.

So the extra features you turn on in drivers requires more vid mem and enough features turned on could require more vid mem than your card can supply.
Hence my suggestion earlier.

Yes, I did try it without the textures loaded to system RAM.

I normally use AAx4 but I did try with it turned off and the option was still grayed out.  I did not try with textures set to less than the default 1024.  I would guess this option doesn't work for many if it doesn't work for my 256MB 9800XT with AA off.

Redd,
You are right, it worked with 512 textures and 4xAA actually using 166MB of 260 available video memory , but I like the graphics much better with 1024 textures.  Back to 1024 with textures preloaded to System memory.  Everything ran great for 3+ hours tonight .  No CTDs and only a couple slight hesitations in heavy combat over smoking field.  I did have a couple timeouts on the preloads though with the TCP switch but I guess that will go away in the next patch.  So far, this is the best patch yet for me.

Looks like we need 256mb Vid cards then.
Another upgrade lol.
Suppose I should be able to pick up a cheap 9800PRO or something like that now that X800 is out.
