IRQ conflict
« on: July 26, 2004, 10:00:43 PM »
I opened up System properties to see if I had any IRQ conflicts, and it turns out I do. I have the NIC and the Sound Card on the same IRQ. Ive heard this can cause problems. Please tell me what I can do about this. thanks.

Yes, it will cause problems.

To solve this, you typically would move one of the cards to another slot in the PCI bus.  Take care to remove the drivers for the device you are going to move BEFORE you actually move it.
If you have the motherboard manual for your computer, they typically show how the PCI slots IRQ's are physically shared.

That does not matter Eagler.  A sound card sharing an interrupt will cause performance/stability problems in any operating system.

true but with win98 I had to make sure everything had its own irq

since win xp, I haven't even had to checked them - guess I was lucky with the assignment from MS :)

It will almost always work in XP/2K, but there are performance ramifications when a sound, network, or video card share a physical IRQ with each other.

changed the slot during lunchbreak today. It appears to work ok, but I will have to put it through its paces tonight.

Thanks for the help.

ok ive fixed this. I found out that the NIC is causing the problem...

Apparently, NICs dont like to share IRQs.

Yep, that is true.  Basically any high data demand device will have performance and/or stability issues when sharing an IRQ with another device.
