In terms of modern firearms you can't really beat the basic bolt-action rifle for long term reliability.

If you're talking about a REALLY long term survival situation (like years) when you're all alone, you'd be better off going with a black powder flintlock.   I wouldn't want to fight off angry mobs with a flintlock though so there's a tradeoff.

Isn't the idea of taking just ONE weapon a silly question though?  All of the "prepared for the end of the world" guys I know have MANY guns :)

Really though my friendship with the local Amish would probably avail me more than any number of guns in a potential "end of civilization" scenario.

lol....rrrrrrright.

So what did you do take that boat through the Panama Canal and up the east coast, all the way from California?  What is that, about a 3 or 4 THOUSAND mile journey?  All this while trying to stay alive in a post apocolyptic world.

Amazing.

But, shouldn't you both be at home looking after your family?

A 45 pistol wouldn't be that great for hunting but for protection just an ok option..
Some version of 30-06 Bolt action with a scope and two boxes of 165 grain weight loads "all purpose" non reloads....

Second choice may be a 99 Savage style lever action...

Remington scoped 30-06 for serious long range plinking
M1 Carbine for medium range plinking
Glock19 for close-in plinking (AMT380 for ground zero plinking)
Ruger 10/22 for bite sized critters
Winchestor 20 gauge shotgun

and for that nostalgic look,
a Traditions .50 cal blackpowder muzzle loader.

plus more amunition than a single person could carry.

I would have to agree with Curval.

Fish are a fairly self-renewing food resource and I remember hearing that water is a natural radiation barrier.

Curval's two fish hooks could sustain him and his family until he figured out how to make new hooks with the bones of the fish he caught. New fishing line could be made with the fibres of local plants.

2 Cases of ammo (assuming you meant 2-50 round boxes) could feed you, assuming you and your family ate wild game every 3 days and were a perfect shot, for 300 days or so.

The gerber is a good idea.

Other than that, a chunk of flint to light fires for cooking and boiling water to drink would be a good idea.

In your Ripsnort doomsday survival kit you would also want to keep some hemp seeds. Easy to weave the fibres and the clothing you make would outlast untanned animal skins. You wouldnt have to worry about contaminated soil, you would be wearing it, not eating it...but you could if things got rough enough.

Oh yeah, and an ugly dog, a sawed off double barrelled shotgun, a music box to give to any crazy kids,,,,, and of course...the last of the V-8 Interceptors.

Mauser for sniping, and a MG42 or M60 for home defense.

What vehicle? Armored Truck, and I'd keep oh MRE's...

Bolt action rifle. Probably a Mauser. Few moving parts, not so many things that can break, easy to maintain, excellent range.

Curv, My family would be with me, packing guns!

My Girlfriend is a better shot then I am, my brother in law is from Texas, and a good shot. My sister is a raging unstopable *****, she needs no weapons!

My mom would be a causulty of the times, I think most crippled people would be :(

With this crack team, and my trusty lab, we would be like the post apocoliptic Ateam!

A case is 1000 rounds or 500 in my book!

My boat you ask?

We would just have to get a few Navy vets from the local VFW, and then get the Iowa working, nothing like 9 16 inch guns for riot control!! :D

Well since my digital photography would be out the window, I'd have a new hobby:
Gun collecting.
There I am in my Ghillie suit all decked out in camo paint and leaves, killing all those nutbags trying to take my food from me and my family and friends.
Remington 700 PSS 308. It loves the Remington 308 168gr BTHP Match ammo as it'll shoot down to 1/4" 3-shot groups @100 yards. I'll get tons of new guns. WooHoo! :D

Well GTO...I'm just going to have to counter your proposed invasion of my homeland with...ummm....the DEATHSTAR.

That's right.  The Deathstar.

Say goodbye to California, afterall that is where all the real rioting will be.  I'll just have Darth tone down the laser enough to saw off that pathetic excuse for a liberal minded seaside state and drop it off into the Pacific.

Your battleships are all belonging to me.
