Hi Folks,

This is getting very iwwitating.

In the BoB last Sunday I was approaching an airfield (with only one other plane in sight) when the screen locked up solid. Everything was dead but I could still hear the engine noise. I had to resort to hitting the power button on the PC. (Alt Tab or Ctrl-Alt-Del had no effect)

Since then I enabled the "Preload textures in system memory" option but just now in the Training Area I had the same lockup. No other visible applications were running at the same time as AH, except the firewall and Norton Antivirus.

I suppose this could be a lot of things but could someone point in the right direction with experimenting. I mean, could this have something to do with my firewall, for instance. I never had this happen when I was on dial-up with AH1.

768 RAM
NVIDIA GeForce Ti 4200 with latest driver
Sprint DSL
Zone Alarm (the free one) with permission given to AH, Live Update Engine, Symantec NetDetect.

Texture size: 256
Unlimited frame rate

Sounds like an overheating CPU. Take the side off your case, check the CPU fan is running. If it is try playing the game with a desk fan blowing cool air onto the CPU. If you have no problems it is definitely heat.

Get a new Heat sink/fan or clean the fins on your existing one.

If you know how to look in the BOIS, it will show CPU Temp in one of the menus. Anything over 50o C could be trouble..

Also, not sure if all motherboard's bios's have a heat warning
alarm or not, but they problably do. In the area of your bios
that tells you what your current temperature is, there should
also be something that asks you what temperature you
want to have to trigger the heat alarm. If your comp ever
hits that temperature, you will hear a loud noise coming
from your computer (letting you know about the trouble)
thus letting you know you should shut it down. There also
should be an option asking you what temperature you want
the computer to automatically shut down if it gets too hot.
Problem is, I don't know what the suggested temperatures
are for both the alarm and the auto-shut down...anyone?

oh, ya, and his suggestion about the desk fan is excellent.
I have, on occasion, had heat problems when temps outside get very hot. The desk fan I have works wonders on an overheated
CPU.
