Downsizing AH
« on: August 08, 2004, 09:50:53 PM »
I have had alot of trouble downsizing AHII ever since it came out. in the latest patch, the problem is getting better. The FIRST time I hit the windows key or alt+tab it downsizes fine. But if I try again, it will not work. The screen freezes except for at the very bottom I can see my desktop mouse. I click around the bottom of the screen where the taskbar is and guess where AHII is. Once I click it the screen becomes unfrozen or whatever and I can continue to play, or quit.
Ive read that it may be a problem with firewalls, so I turned my firewall off yet this process continues.

This issue can be related to a lot of things.  Incorrectly installed video driver or an older video driver are the primary causes.

However, the installation of other Windows applications can cause this as well.  Particularly, screen savers or problems with the 'themes' in XP (really should disable that one).

Its not my video driver because just today I updated it and it automatically installs itself.

Not quite sure what you mean my XP Themes though, might need to look into that.

BTW, AH would run fine without a problem before I updated today(except for when trying to downsize it). Today after I installed the new driver, reboot my computer and played AH; I began to get stutters. First time I have ever gotten them.

Did you remove the old video drivers before iinstalling the new ones?

Also, I am concerned you said the video drivers were auto-updated?  Do you have the Windows auto-updater running?  If so, that is not good.
Also note the drivers Microsoft delivers for the video card are usually about a year or two out of date as they will only deliver WHQL certified drivers, which NVidia does not submit for very often (once a year seems to be the trend with NVidia).

i laso recall some of the Catalyst drivers had problems with AH1 (and 2) for alt-tabbing...  got the Omega drivers and had no problems...

ati card, fyi...

unsure whether the more recent Cat drivers addressed the issue.

I did not have to uninstall my old driver because NVidia installed over it (or that is what I was told)

Yes you DO have to uninstall your old driver.  That is prob. the issue here.

Here is info. from one of Silat's post's that should help out.

Instructions for proper install of video drivers.

Pick 1 driver:

Nvidea - http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp - go here and download the drivers to your desktop.

ATI - http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/....x=5&submit.y=4 - go here and download the drivers to your desktop.

Omega tweaked drivers. Recommended by Nvidea and ATI - http://www.omegadrivers.net/main.php - go here and download the drivers to your desktop.

Now get this:
http://www.driverheaven.net/cleaner/ - Put it on your desktop

Now install DRIVER CLEANER

Go to add and remove programs and remove all references to ATI or Nvidea.

Restart in safe mode. Usually by clicking the f8 button during reboot.

DO NOT INSTALL ANYTHING if windows asks.

.

Run DRIVER CLEANER AND CLICK THE CLEAN button.

Then restart. DO NOT INSTALL ANYTHING once again. It's ok, all will be well :)

When you reach your desktop click on the driver you downloaded and follow prompts.

Restart..

If you have any problems read the helpfile that comes with DRIVE CLEANER.

got to this part towards the end of the process and this list came up telling me how to install it

How to install the nvidia Omega drivers (WinXP):

1-  Close all programs
2-  Right Click "My Computer" in your desktop and select "properties" OR press "start" and do the above
3-  Go to the "Hardware" TAB, then click on "Device Manager"
4-  Expand the "display adapters" icon
5-  Double click your video adapter
6-  Go to the "driver" TAB
7-  Click on the "Update Driver" button
8-  Select "Install from a list...", click "Next"
9-  Select "Don't search. I will choose...", click "Next"
10- Press the "Have Disk..." button
11- Press "Browse" to look for the folder where the drivers where extracted, (if the extraction folder was not changed during installation, it should be "C:\Program Files\Nvidia Omega Drivers vX.XXXX") inside it you will find a folder named "2KXP_INF", this is where the drivers are located (don't select the Performance or Quality folders, those are ONLY for backup purposes), press "Open" after the INF is displayed in the upper window, click "OK"
12- You video card should be displayed in the list and already be selected, click "Next"
13- Windows will warn you that the drivers are not signed, just click "Continue Anyway" to force the installation
14- The drivers shall now install, if Windows asks you if you want overwrite a newer files that is already installed in your PC, SAY YES, REPLACE THE NEWER FILES, if you don't overwrite them the drivers will not work as intended and could make Windows crash unable to boot.  After that just press "finish", "close" and you will be prompted to restart you PC, say "yes".
15- Done!, Enjoy!

I cant find the "Display Adapters" Icon:confused:

the list it gives me after I click Device Manager the list it gives me is:
-Computer
-Disk Drives
-DVD/CD-Rom Drives
-Floppy Disks Controllers
-Floppy Disk Drives
-IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers
-Keyboards
-Mice and Other Pointing Devices
-Modems
-Network Adapters
-Other Devices
 -> Video Controller (VGA Compatible)
-Ports (COM & LPT)
-Processors
-Sound, Video & Game Controllers
-System Devices
-Universal Serial Bus Controllers

I cant get past step 4 until I can find out where that is. Maybe I should still be in safe mode after I rebooted? will try it

got it working. I had to install an older driver before installing the new one.

Which is more importan? Performance or Quality?

I got the omega driver and chose quality over performance. Played AH just now and got fps from 17-77 at 3k. only problem with it is it kind of stutters. Im thinking of going back and changing to performance.

BTW, after I went back and fixed the driver, AH still will not downsize. I am interested in what you said about XP themes?
