Okay, watching this movie again, I'd say it's one of the most entertaining and creative movies of all time.

The only thing that I question: why would machines allow the humans plugged into the matrix  have a "reality" at all? Why not just make them be "thoughtless" or in a coma?

The concept of the movie was pretty impressive to me....very high on the "cool" factor.

Pick up the pipe Skull.

Nuke I thought the same thing.  They leave themselves without total control.  It's almost as if the machines wanted an anomaly, neo, to occur.

Yeah, that part was a little far-fetched.

Sarcastic answer:  A blank screen would have made for a ****ty movie.

Pre-Marine Corp pothead answer:  Dude... the alternate reality of the Matrix is in place because the human mind cant be contained... I mean, its like... like, like you know youre in the Matrix, but you dont, so you dont fight it, cause youre happy.  I mean, everything tastes like chicken. Besides, once you see youre risidual self image and realize you have no hair and a bunch of **** sticking out of you you'd go back to sleep anyway.  Its heavy, man.  Heavy.  ...Im hungry, lets get a taco.

It was a cool movie, but the concept is flawed. But we are talking entertainment here. I enjoyed the movie.
Men fear thought as they fear nothing else on earth -- more than ruin -- more even than death.... Thought is subversive and revolutionary, destructive and terrible, thought is merciless to privilege, established institutions, and comfortable habit. ... Bertrand Russell

I thaught the ending sucked.  To much build up for bad finish.

When neo made the machines die outside the matrix that's when it just started getting hoaky to me.

First one was the best.

Second one sucked.

The third one sucked even harder.

It's basically cyberpunk watered down for a semiliterate audience.

Fun movie, Nuke.  The answer to your question is this:  Had book been written so that humans had no reality, there would have been no movie to make. :)

Organs not used deteriorate.

If i'm not mistaken, brain sygnals carry an electrical current of sorts and stimulating brain would cause current to occur. No strimulation - deterioration of the body, loss of power.

Back in 1975 I had a Philosophy 101 prof who began the 1st day of class with a thought experiment..

"How would you feel different than you do now, if your brain was in a vat somewhere and someone was just feeding it a simulation of your life?"

I think we was tokin big time too.
