Dr YO, that's a well thought post and makes a very solid point. Kudos. However, when I appear to be "quake bashing" I am referring to the attitude of the players. I had fun w/ Q2, specially with the Action mod, but it grew old rather quickly. I haven't played quake 3, pretty much gave up quake 9-10 months ago because I was sick of the kill'em all let God sort'em out hysteria that seems prevalent on most servers. The same applies to Rainbow6, which I thought would be a much better enviroment, as I like team play and using strategy to overcome the opposition. Watched R6 degenerate into "quake-ness" with everyone wanting to be the guy who kills everyone on the other team (when not playing the missions, but against another human team) and to hell w/ his 'team mates'.
I avoided brand W because of the cost.
Can't say alot of brand A.
I love AH and hopefully will be able to swing staying after it goes pay to play (biggest obstacle will be the wife I believe =\). I've been looking for a good WWII sim to fly online and AH is fitting the bill nicely (as long as I can foot the bill =)
Gadfly has a point about "quake-ness" being in AH.
A lot of pilots just want to jump into the nearest furball and shoot down every red icon they see, not caring if they die in the process (seen this in many a quake arena).
HOs with pilots running flat at out each other squeezing the trigger at d1.2k and hoping to be the winner _and_ still be flying (rocket launcher duels anyone?)
The "Every man for himself" mentality I've seen a lot of pilots fly with. I can't count the times I've watched 3+ friendlies dive after a bandit that has lost a wing while there are 5+ bandits still alive and well (with more arriving) and shooting down other friendlies (tossing grenades from shadows maybe?) only wanting to "steal" the kill and up thier score.
Gadfly points out that most of the action in the main/open arena isn't flown historically. If you sit back and watch you'll see, and I'm not just talking about N1K2s fighting FW190s and Bf109s. I'm talking about tactics and loadouts. Guys load up 25-50% fuel because it cuts down the weight of their of thier bird. In WWII pilots worried about having enough fuel to get home, not having too much to outmanuever the opposition. HOs just seem unrealistic to me, as they reduce the odds of surviving compared to good ACM to get angles and hit the bandits six.
If that is how they have fun flying AH, so be it. That's all well and good for them. I hope they're getting their money's worth, and if I'm able and they need help I'll dive in and help.
My idea of fun is leading a formation of 5+ B17s on a deep strike strategy missions with ponies for scorts. We get the 17s bunched up nice and tight and off we go to strategically wipe out whoever has aggravated us the most. High altitude daylight bombing raids on enemy infrastructure, then going and capturing the fields after we've "broken thier backs" =)
Sorry for the length, and here's the soap box back (and I really dinnae what prompted this post either =)
