Game lock up problem Need Help
« on: August 19, 2004, 03:40:19 AM »
Ok ive been pulling may hair out for 3 days now ... and its time for some master input .....

Offline game plays fine ...
h2h or online it plays for a little bit then locks up in game (all i see is something that looks like a screenshot and the sound keeps running  ( but not as a loop )

I was getting a black screen and the voice chat would continue
this was with the 4.3 cats

so i switched drivers to the 4.7 cats  (now i have the screen shot looking type lock up )

System ..

Asus A7n8x-e deluxe
Amd 2400+  clocked @ 2.0 ghz     (12 x 166)
256 x 2   ddr 2700
80 gig WD set up on ide    fresh format w/98se sp1.5
Fix it utilities AV program  (same as all my other pc's and they work fine ) same security settings ect ..  (everything is clean )

video card
Crucial Radeon 9600pro 128mb  (standard clocking)

monitor set at 800x600 32 bit   85hz

ingame video settings
800x600 32bit  optimal refresh  512 textures
everything at default  sliders @ 1/2 way
no preload in video or memory .

Any idea's guys ... the freeze happens around the 1st 5-10 mins .

Temps are all ok 45-49c
all my other games are working fine ...
the only thing i havent done is a reinstall (i used my settings folder from my other pc i wonder if thats a problem ??)

I'll post up the dxdiag  here too ... and try a reinstall

- try disabling the onboard sound in bios and do without...

- run the tests before dumping the dxdiag... probably doesnt change much..

- how do you connect to the internet? maybe the network device / modem got a problem.. that wouldnt show in the non internet games... does ah2 run in offline mode without problems?

- i have the same mb, and i had problems with my memory you tried running a memtest for 2 hours or so?

- try to install directx 9c

thats what i can think off. i somehow doubt that its the memory because you run it at 166 mhz, at least i assume that since you run the cpu at that clock. It is possible to run cpu and memory at diffrent speeds, so verify that its running at 166 & with timings by SPD or more conservative.

Have you tried running a cpu stress test?
maybe a problem on the voltage supplied by the psu, whats the data off your  PSU?

ok its gotta be in the video or sound drivers   ...

when i 1st started i used the stock video drivers from the cd
they were dated early 2003

cpu timing was at the main boards default setting
which was  15 x 133   (2.0ghz)  temps were running alittle high 54c while gaming and it wasnt totally stable

i wasnt getting the lock up with them .
but I had "Black dar bars and icons on the clipboard map .

So i switched to the drivers from my 9550 cards cd
it fixed the dar bar colours  ( i think these are 4.3 cats )

but i was getting a black out screen in the game after 15 mins or so

heres were i switched the cpu timings to 12 x 166 (2.0 ghz)
this setting has better temps 46c - 49c while loaded

im still getting the black out screen and the sound continues in the game like normal even the voice chat was continuing ...

so i get the 4.7 cats and install them -----------
run fit it utilities tests on the pc hardware/ software and every thing still checks out ...
i had it over to the Mrs Roo andd she plays generals zero hour for a couple of hours with no problems (everything turned up to max )

in AH2 its now getting that screen shot looking freeze up with the sound looping i think ... (every thing is frozen and i have to hard boot)

Ive checked for bios / mb updates and i have all the current stuff
ive also deleated and reinstalled ah2 fresh with no old files or settings used in it .  its still freezing .

ive checked the voltage and its right were it should be and stable very little fluxuation

im going to try the sound disable and see if that will isolate it futher   but i think its in the video drivers ...

Its not a connection problem as far as i know cause ive jumped on my old gamer and it plays sweet (like always) 800 kbps avg dsl  connect  no firewall .
(i didnt have this problem on my a7n8x-x deluxe machine but it was running a ti4600 video card and det drivers )

Rosco,
You might try another NIC.  My Marvell failed and I had packet loss with the Nvidia LAN.  Working fine with old Intel Pro 100 NIC.

Temp note.  I had an A7n8x DLX with a third party temp monitor that matched MB Monitor's temps.  I installed this board when it failed  and my MB Monitor temps (no third party) went up 10 deg C.  I reinstalled the waterblock with Artic Silver 5 and temps were still higher.  My tower is inside a desk bay, and I don't like aircon so I quit worrying bout it as it runs stable.

Nvidia driver note.  I am using the 4.24 (4.27 out last month).  Make sure you aren't using the Nvidia IDE drviver.

This sure sounds heat related to me.  You should know due to the enormous floating point computations for the flight model that a good flight simulator (i.e running very tight) will heat up a CPU pretty quickly.
Easy to test.  Open the case, blow a fan at the motherboard.  Big fan.

Of course that is a possibility Skuzzy, but something was changed in this version of the A7N8X and Motherboard Monitor and the BIOS do not have access to the diode temp sensor.  Everyone is getting readings up to 10 deg C higher than other versions of this board making 46-49 C a fairly conservative temp reading unless he is getting it from a reliable third party source.

I dont think heat is the issue

as always i check bolth the bios monitored heat temp along with the asus probe ... and i ran out to the race car trailer and grabbed my infrared temp tester and checked the heat sink just to be shure . (it was reading 2c less then what the bios was reading... thats about normal for that test )

along with the fact that i already have the side case off and a big fan curcalating the air ...   my stack is under the desk 6 in off the floor on a wood case so the intake fan vent pulls the coolest air .

I think if it was over heating When i played Zero hour and did the system load tests it would of over temped then ..

i think the nic is ok i was playing fine with the stock video drivers
(I just had the dar bar colour issue and higher temps from the 15x133 clocking )  It seams to like the 12 x 166 no more little problems with program stability .  its just ah2 that has the problem .

right now im going to try to mess with the sound acceleration and see if that may be the conflict ... and then go back to the video drivers    (if worse comes to worse i'll put my 9550 video card in and try that with its stock drivers 4.3's )  I just hate disabling my old trusty gamer cause i can always play on that pc .

Im still open for anymore idea's, tweeks , sheep , hammers, and or what ever .     Thanks guys

Sound excelleration was the trick ... i  lowered it on notch from full and played for an hour with no lock ups or any other problems as of yet ..  more testing as i get time
