Well when i first begin a game the closest faction early and spend all my money on building armies. I conquered all of the france's provinces except one by about 15-20 turns (the pope told me to stop, curse him).

I try to expand my number of provinces at the start to about 20 before i think about building structures to get better units. This way i have a couple of 1000 gold pouring in every turn. If one of your neighbours is already at war with someone attack him. It's not very nice to kick a guy when he's down, but life sucks. :-)
I would say most of my money comes from sea trade. I have a boat in every sea province. Don't forget to give the title of a provence that makes money to a general with a high acumen. It can often double the money it makes.
Think they are a few bugs in the game tho. My king has a influence rating of 8 crowns yet no other leader will talk to my emmisaries. With a rating of 8 i'm considered the uber king.
tac, they have fixed it in R:TW. I sent my elephants into the side of the roman line and they smashed all the way down the length of it. It caused 4 units of romans to run for their lives.
