There seems to be more of them up here in Oregon too, though it may be I just wasn't looking very hard before. I see one virtually every time I go near a river anymore. There's a large number of Red Tailed hawks around town, to the point that I see about 5 different pairs on the 10 mile stretch of highway leading out to work. We actually have some living on campus here in the wetlands.
From what I understand, the use of pestisides was the primary culprit in the reduction in numbers. The Perigrin Falcon was the most glaring example of this.
Anyways, I'm pretty sure the Bald Eagle has been removed from the endangered species list (as well as the Perigrin Falcon).
