Eagles in the wild (as wild as Ohio gets)
« on: August 24, 2004, 11:21:16 AM »
I’m in the NW part of Ohio. I took my 10-year-old daughter fishing yesterday afternoon and we were thrilled to see two bald eagles fly around the reservoir for about 15 minutes. Twice they flew within fifty feet of us. I’ve lived in this area all my life and this is the first time I’ve seen these birds in the wild. I’ve also noticed a large increase in the hawk population around here. Something is going right.

The kid and I were thrilled. I hope she gets to see many more like this.
My password at work had to contain exactly 8 characters… I chose Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Yep they are all over the place in the midwest now.  One of my ex-co-workers in Illinois took a pic of about a dozen of them in a single tree.  Neat birds.

Me and the wife watched a young Hawk grab a squirrel land on the roof next door and proceed to tear it apart and eat it, in fact there are so many Hawks in the neighborhood now they actually are keeping the Cat and Duck population controlled.. I also see at least one eagle a week now and almost had one land on the roof of the car... But before this past two years I havent seen a wild hawk or Eagle ever in florida... It is amazing!

LOL, my son and I watched a hawk the other evening as it circled low over the neighborhood. I said, "See that hawk? He's hunting." "What's he hunting?" he asked. "Oh...squirrels, cats, small dogs...babies." His eyes got real big. "OK, I was kiddin' about the babies", I said "but he'll grab a rodent or small animal if he can." He went to check to see if our cats were safe inside the house.;)

There seems to be more of them up here in Oregon too, though it may be I just wasn't looking very hard before.  I see one virtually every time I go near a river anymore.  There's a large number of Red Tailed hawks around town, to the point that I see about 5 different pairs on the 10 mile stretch of highway leading out to work.  We actually have some living on campus here in the wetlands.

From what I understand, the use of pestisides was the primary culprit in the reduction in numbers.  The Perigrin Falcon was the most glaring example of this.

Anyways, I'm pretty sure the Bald Eagle has been removed from the endangered species list (as well as the Perigrin Falcon).

I was flying a glider here in PA last weekend.  I thermalled with two bald eagles.  At the same time, on the radio some other glider pilots reported thermalling with a bald eagle about 15 miles away.  They aren't that rare anymore, I think they've even been taken off the endangered species list.

I was back visiting the folks in upsate NY last week and my father, brother and I watched a young bald eagle, still didnt have a white head yet, fly right over the house. We have had a small population in the area for years now but you dont see them often so it was a real treat.

I live in the Lakeview 10 minutes South of Buffalo. I can walk a minute and be on a cliff overlooking a beack on lake Erie. I love the ADKs too. Gone build a house up there some day. My lakeview is part of Hamburg. Which in turn is part of Western New York.

I was outside my side garage door feeding my dog (this was in December 2003) and an adult Bald Eagle flew about 25 feet off the ground, right between my house and the neighbors house (He was coming up from the White River, we live on a 100 ft. cliff) and that sucker made me SHAT MY PANTS! MAN did that spook me! I could hear it before my peripherial vision picked it up. Scared the living crap outta me, I felt so close that I could have reached out and touched a wingtip.  Never want to see one that close up again.
