There's a difference between "forming" a strategy and actual practice. I believe the reality of the game lays somewhere between all the replies in this post.
Our squad stresses everyone making it home safe after a mission. It doesn't always happen, and during some missions none of us RTB. Like playing chess, you don't always win, but the enjoyment is forming a strategy and watching it unfold.
It's a continual learning process, if nothing is learned, then nothing gained.
I will be the first to admit that on some days, the best strategy is to saddle up with your favorite beer, a warm sheep, and watch the slaughter unfold
