Hey, I admit I'm just guessing on this. I've always been surprised at how quickly graphics could be rendered and I haven't kept up with modern graphics capabilities. It’s staggering how many polygons were reported drawn during some of the beta testing and the game was still playable.
Now then, if you up more then 4 or 5 formations, some people start having problems. If you add 9-11 more objects per plane x 3 planes, my guess is that's a 10-20% increase in the graphics load for each bomber and maybe 1% overall for the pilot. When a dozen 110g2s are diving into our bomber group, and my system occasionally stutters now, the last thing I want is to increase that load for objects inside the planes.
I'm probably wrong about the loads considering the moving controls that are being added to the cockpits. I'm guessing again but it looks like around 7 more object to draw for each fighter and maybe x3 per bomber formation. Don't misunderstand, I like the new cockpit upgrades Hitech is coming out with and the moving controls have generated a lot of positive feedback. My position is that only the bomber guys will really see crewmembers and as cool as it might be, some of us MAY suffer for their presence.
Where I think the game has the most potential to look better, and where I’m currently focused, is on the exterior skins and the terrains where I see a lot of possibilities for eye candy. Most of those changes will add to the graphics load but that's were I think a 1 or 2% hit is well worth it.
Now just watch, the new bomber will come out with crewmen at every position.
