na·tion·al·ism    ( P )  Pronunciation Key  (nsh-n-lzm, nshn-)
n.
1. Devotion to the interests or culture of one's nation.

2.The belief that nations will benefit from acting independently rather than collectively, emphasizing national rather than international goals.

3. Aspirations for national independence in a country under foreign domination.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have seen this word thrown out like an insult or dirty word? Why is it bad? I am out for the interests of the US first and foremost.  My nation and the people of my nation should always come first for our politicians and government policy.

Is this a bad thing now?

What it means doesn't matter, it's what people think it means.  It is seen as a kind of supremacy.

The left likes to use it as a keyword.

Nationalism is the cause of countless wars, etc, etc, etc, you cant choose the country youre born in so why love it, etc, etc, etc.

Probably more fitting when throwing it around as an insult.

It's no different (not in definition but in use) as the word fascists.  I've seen too many times a right of center thinking person called a fascist and told to shut up for voicing his opinions.  I do see this mostly on the left.  Most EXTREME (<-note the word here...not saying all) lefties only like dissent if it is towards there cause or goals.  Anything else is fascisim (SP)

I will concede that arguing with poeple like you describe is hard, but I would say that though they may be nationalists, they are in many cases dip****s.

You can put your country first and still see her flaws and see the good in other countries.

Off hand I do not remeber the thread, but I think it was eagler that you named a nationalist.

I think I qualify as a nationalist, and I try and be fairly reasonable.

But I see your point, and that point is why I have made an effort to try and stay out of the political threads. :D

Welcome to the internet where we can engage on a daily basis in the exchange of ideas with PEOPLE from other countries and other cultures.

Our fathers and our grandfathers called them "foreigners". Today, though we may disagree and we struggle with cultural differences, they are no longer foreigners. They are our friends.

Welcome to the future. It may not be during yours or your children's lifetime, but someday historians will look back at the internet as the beginning of the end for nationalism and the birth of globalism.

Makes having civil discussions hard.

That's where you are oh so wrong GScholtz, as a non-American, I'm sure it is just hard for you to grasp the concept that as an American my opinions may have changed, but not the fact that I am right.
