Rome: Total War question
« on: September 23, 2004, 11:43:16 AM »
OK Has anyone played this one yet? I know they made Shogun and Medieval but I never picked those up in the store and have been playing the demo for a few weeks now and saw where RTW was sitting on the shelf at my local Gamestop last night. So before I go drop the cash on the game has anyone played it yet (it was supposed to have shipped out this past Monday)?

I thought it was out next month? Are you sure it wasn't one of those empty pre-order boxes?

Edit. Nevermind, with it being a UK developer I had assumed it would be released here first. Activision is US publisher.

Nope the guys in the store said it was in this past Monday.

http://gamestop.com/

Their website shows more on the way to my local store since they must have sold out last night.

Just got a call from a buddy who got his preordered copy this past Monday as well.

Medival and Shogun certifiably kicked ass. Addictive as hell.

I'll let you know later tonight... EB Games just left a message that my copy of Rome:TW is in. I preordered it late last month. Now, how to get out of work early... I feel the flu coming on...

Thanks BT.

Now who wants to trade a few games to me so I can get my hands on Medieval Total War? Maybe I have something that you guys may want.

I have traded away several but let me get my list together and I will gladly send them to you at my cost if any of you guys want to trade.

Demo ran fine on my comp, only issue I have is that the shortcut on my desktop doesnt work.  Well anyways, I loved the demo, looks like Ill be doing some shopping this weekend. Oh I was wondering, does this game revolve around campaign style play, where you can have the same units go into the next battle. The reason I ask is because I noticed there was an experience column at the end of the battle. So I was just curious if this was so your troops could become better as the battles went on.

I am hoping the next version they release will be a american civil war game. I have been dying to find a really good civil war game for the computer, I own Robert E. Lee Civil war 1&2 but they are both turn style. Not to mention that you really dont get into the battles all that much with the set up they use.

The R:TW demo only had the 3d real time battle stuff in it, all previous :TW titles had a full blown strategy part as well. Yes, your armies will fight another day, your generals may develop flaws and vices, you have provinces, build stuff, get taxes, build armies if you screw up your country might spiral down into civil war .. and a lot of other things to keep us wannabe emperors on our toes :)

MTW and Vikings expansion were probably the best strategy games I've ever played.

Can't wait for Rome Total War, just hope that the same amount of strategy or more is there. And that they haven't turned it into a more eye candy and battles release to suit the RTS and more action orientated market.

Some of the features though look outstanding.

Rome Total War forums are full of reviews all giving it 10/10. Some of the usual review sites.. Think I'll be buying it tomorrow.

IGN - 9.4/10

"Personally, I've never given a score this high before but Rome Total War is without a doubt one of the best games I've ever played. The combination of subject matter, game mechanics, and outstanding visuals add up to one of the best experiences you'll have on the PC.

Now if you'll excuse me, there are some Thracians at the gate just begging for another ass-kicking. "

GameSpot - 9.1/10

"Ultimately, this is a deeply satisfying strategy game that can appeal to game players of all types. If you're looking for a complex, addictive, conquer-the-world campaign, you can look forward to the imperial campaign, which is good for countless hours of gameplay all on its own. Meanwhile, if what you want are realistic, cinematic-style battles, you can dive into the historical battles or the skirmish or multiplayer modes, or have the computer manage all the details in the campaign and just join the battles. And if you're looking for both, then you'll probably find Rome: Total War to be perfectly sublime blend of the two."

GameSpy - 4.5/5

"The bottom line is, if you love strategy, and prefer a little historical realism instead of fantasy units, this is your game. There's nothing else like it on the market. Sure, it might be a little complex for the casual gamer, and it might be a little rough in places, but Rome is as deep and as satisfying as they come. Veni, vidi, vici!"

What I like about the strategy element is that they have done away with the chess style, risk-esque move one square a turn game. You can now place units anywhere on the map and they move according to unit speed. It will be the first game I buy when I build my new FX-53 based computer later this year.
