frame rate issue ,new card time?
« on: October 06, 2004, 11:03:52 PM »
Howdy all , ive got a xp 2500+ that i can run at 3200+ NP , and a 9800 pro ati card . Now when on the big maps ,and flying over a smokin base my frames drop to around 50 or so . Now that isnt the problem in itself but i can tell a huge difference in performance . there is a very suttle studder, you can really tell when you roll the plane that it is hammering the cpu or the video card. Now for you guys with the 6800's and x800 pros, does your frames stay constant and smooth in all conditions ? also can you run at 1024 textures without a problem? Now ive had to run 256 textures and the game is fine , all my sliders are set to performance. But i want to runn 1024 text's and some eye candy, i realy dont wanna drop 400 buck on a card and see the same thing . i cant stand any choppyness or studder so maybe im anal about it but if a 6800gt or x800pro will get it done, ill do it. thx all 38maw

btw ive tried it all at stock speeds and it really doesnt make much of a difference

Skuzzy you have my dxdiag read out , if you were going to ask for it

Ruk,
The cpu/vpu combo you have is pretty balanced.  If you got a faster vpu, it would be bottlenecked by the cpu.  Check out  Tom's Hardware VGA Charts IV .   These tests were performed with a P4 3.2.  In many of the benchmarks, a lot of cards of different architectures and speeds score within a few FPS of the best card, indicating a cpu bottleneck.  If you ran those benchmarks on an Athon XP 3200+, which is the performance equivalent of a P4 2.8c it would be even more pronounced.  This effect has been noticed in AH2 by quite a few,  "I bought a new video card but see no improvement in FPS".  The 6800U and the x800XT will push a P4 3.6 and FX-53 past their limit in some games.

Tomorrow I'm bringing on line a new FX-53 rig @ 2.6 GHz with a BFG 6800 U OC in it.  I'll let you know how it does in AH2.  I'm sending the sig rig to my office to do some real work.

I agree 38ruk.  You are CPU limited.  The 9800Pro has a lot more performance available than you can extract with the CPU you currently have.

The FX-53/6800 U combo works pretty well.  70 - 85 (mon. refresh rate) FPS @ 1280 x 1024, 512 texture size, textures loaded into system ram, AA x4, AF off, detail and distance sliders maxed,  card settings to highest quality,  and it was folding at the same time.
