John Stewart's Daily Show Numbers Fall
« on: October 18, 2004, 09:19:54 AM »
I'm surprised at this. I thought he was at the top of his game right now. I thought his numbers would be huge.

Plus the CNN meltdown...

COMEDY CENTRAL's 'DAILY SHOW' has experienced surprise audience erosion -- despite a publicity push by host Jon Stewart.

Stewart, who announced last week that he plans to support John Kerry, pulled 1,040,000 total viewers for the month of September -- down 7% from August, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

Jumbo hype from media writers and a bestselling book apparently have failed to translate into any TV audience improvement.

MORE

CNN editors were busy this weekend cleaning up a transcript from Stewart's Friday appearance on CROSSFIRE. One CNN executive called Stewart's performace "belligerent."

During the live program, Stewart slammed host Tucker Carlson: "You're as big a dick on your show as you are on any show."

The awkward exchange came at the end of an 8 minute segment between Stewart, Carlson and co-host Paul Begala.

***

CARLSON: You had John Kerry on your show and you sniff his throne and you're accusing us of partisan hackery?

STEWART: Absolutely.

CARLSON: ...you have this marvelous opportunity not to be the guy's butt boy, to go ahead and be his butt boy. Come on. It's embarrassing.

STEWART: I was absolutely his butt boy. I was so far -- you would not believe what he ate two weeks ago.

STEWART: You know, the interesting thing I have is, you have a responsibility to the public discourse, and you fail miserably.

CARLSON: You need to get a job at a journalism school, I think.

STEWART: You need to go to one.

The thing that I want to say is, when you have people on for just knee-jerk, reactionary talk...

CARLSON: Wait. I thought you were going to be funny. Come on. Be funny.

STEWART: No. No. I'm not going to be your monkey.

BEGALA: Go ahead. Go ahead.

STEWART: I watch your show every day. And it kills me.

CARLSON: I can tell you love it.

STEWART: It's so -- oh, it's so painful to watch...

CARLSON: Is this really Jon Stewart? What is this, anyway?

STEWART: Yes, it's someone who watches your show and cannot take it anymore. I just can't.

CARLSON: What's it like to have dinner with you? It must be excruciating. Do you like lecture people like this or do you come over to their house and sit and lecture them; they're not doing the right thing, that they're missing their opportunities, evading their responsibilities?

CARLSON: I wouldn't want to eat with you, man. That's horrible.

STEWART: I know. And you won't.

Before appearing on CNN, Stewart blasted reporter and CROSSFIRE co-host Bob Novak.

"I would not have him on the show. I have standards," Stewart explained to the NEW YORKER's Ken Auletta. "I wouldn't do it. He shouldn't be on television. CNN should not have him on the air. He should not be amongst civilized people."

The CNN thing seemed pre-meditated.  He seems to want to be taken seriously, yet he goes on a low-rated CNN political talk show and criticizes them for being too political.  Maybe if he'd gone on FoxNews and did his diatribe people would have taken it seriously, but going on leftist CNN and accusing their taking heads of being talking heads was a big mis-calculation.  He should stick to being funny, but maybe all his lefty fanboys have convinced him that he is the real deal.

I still watch it.

Unlike CNN and Fox News, the show is funny and doesn't pretend to not be full of ****.

Kinda shows which way the election will go....supporting Kerry may feel good at a rally or a party, but a real life translation of him running the country is the equivelent of Wiley Coyote hitting the canyon floor with a thud....just not to pleasant to think about.

Stewart abhores Bob Novak. When Stewart goes off about Novak it is usually pretty funny and rightly so being Novak is a POS...

I do wish I had seen or known about this interview. I imagine it having a different context then seen in this thread but I believe Stewart holds some anger at what he and many American's feel as a falure of main stream media..

Why is Novak a POS?

And what failure of the mainstream media is a lefty like Stewart complaining about?  Is it the fact the Dan Rather got caught lying by right-wing lunatics on the Internet?

Just a cheap shot on my part....a true shot but cheap nonetheless.

Stewarts open support of Kerry has cost him audience share....he should have polled his viewers to see which position would have lifted his support among viewers, much like Kerry does before spewing at the stump.

Humm.. Stewart losing audience I find very suspect.  Could be true but I suppose I would rather compare data across a larger time scale than perhaps the 2 weeks (or whatever the length is) this pole used for it's numbers.

Thanks for posting the Vid link Sandman in the other thread.. Was a good watch.. Cracked me up Stewart calling him a dick. I actually was suprised..

Failure of the media?? Where to start? You see no problems with the state of american media at this moment??

edit: Stewart dug on Dan Rather for days after that debacle.

Finally something we can agree on, though I suspect we have different ideas on how the "media" has failed.

Why does an answer have two question marks at the end?  The US media is very successfully using its near-monopoly to promote its leftist candidate.  Why would Stewart complain about that?  Is it the NEAR-monopoly part he doesn't like?

That video was embarassing! Jon Stewart came off very badly. Looks like he is unaccustomed to somebody disagreeing with him and challenging his views..

Ouch...

Actually, he just seemed baffled by Carlson telling him he should be doing hard-hitting political journalism on a comedy show.  I was also baffled at that assertion.
