Thatcher saved the British economy, pure and simple. The fact that she pissed off and put out of work a bunch of tyrannical, selfish, communist coal miners in the process is better still.

Maggie!!!

Tinpot is funny..he said Thatcher went to war in the Fawlands in order to win an election. What point is he trying to make? Is he saying the the war was so popular in Britain that it caused her re-election??? Funny:)

If the majority of Brits thought the war was worth it, what is he complaining about?

But a war can be won many ways. What I was refering to was the fact that Bush wants to use the British regiment of the Black Watch in and around Baghdad so that he can crow about how strong the coalition is whilst our soldiers get killed.

Get em all home before any more of ours or yours get killed. ( I've got two freinds over there and they don't want to be there any more ) Let the Iraqis make there own mess and clear it up.

The only victory will be seeing western troops out of Iraq. We got rid of Saddam for them now let them sort the rest out.

You said Thatcher went to war to get elected again. How does that figure in your feeble mind? Was the war so unpopular that Thatcher needed it to gain re election? Christ.

Thatcher was struggling in the polls at the time. Britain was in economoic and financial poo. Millions were out of work. War was a convenient smokescreen to cover up the almighty mess she made of many peoples lives. A mess some parts of this country haven't fully recovered from even now. It was a pointless waste of lives for a small rock in the south atlantic and was used to bolster her image as a strong leader. She was an out and out *****

She pissed alot more people off then just the coal miners. Refering to coal miners as selfish communists is nieve in the extreme. As my dad certinly isn't any of that.

Why would the war create a positive effect for Thatcher, as opposed to a negative?

I Win.

Yes the 1970s were much better, when the happy coal miners shut down the nation at will... Hey wasnt one government even forced to cut the working week to 2 or 3 days because the selfish, tyrannical communists coal miners unions made enery prices so high and resisted many alternative energy supplies...

:rofl :rofl

Gixer I'm sure you love your father, but if he ever supported the coal union behavior of the era then he is as big a part of the problem as anyone...

Thanks Maggie!

TINPOT,

My dad is from Newcastle, all my family from his side are from around the North of England and Scotland.

Myself, I've spent about 6 years in total living in the UK off and on.

Sadly people are daft and shallow. People love to retreat into a cosy jingoistic flag waving fever. Helps em forget what else is going on. You chaps should know all about that. You have some problems at home there in the USA. perhaps you ought to devote some of that multi million dollar defence budget to sorting them out instead of messing about in other peoples countries.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Help when its needed and wanted by the people you are trying to help. Then they will be gratefull for it. But Don't ever try to help if help is not asked for. You'll be damned for that.

No, none of my family were miners during the era of Thatcher (They were miners before and after the Wars 1&2) but they did get to watch her destroy more then just the coal industry in the north.

I don't know how much you know about England other then what you've read in books or the net, or if you've ever been there for any length of time. But Thatcher wasn't all that, that you make her out to be. And she is truly hated to this day north of the Midlands. And not just by the working class.

Sorry but your completely wrong on this one.
