What's the best fighter these days?

All around package deal best warrior.

Factoring in with / without ENY limitations  , even though I know that's a moving target, would be good.

I wonder what "average" ENY limitation would be guessed at anyway?

since you said "all around", i would have to say the P38.  the ord load out is great and it can hold its own with most planes in the plane set.

The problem with the 38 is its combination of poor visability and sluggish handling at speed. One on one or in a small furball its awesome but its a tough plane for the "average goober" to fly in a high threat enviornment. F6F and -1 hog offer alot of the same positives with a bit better survivability for most.

i used to say Spit IX was best all round fighter, seems Spit V is better these days, and stupid fuel burn means spits are very short legged or so it seems.

N1k has to be best all rounder with range, ammo, manouverablility and performance im ashamed to say. :(

F6f is great all rounder, i just hate 50cals though.
I am not ashamed to confess that I am ignorant of what I do not know.

Ah yes, the F6F, haven't flown that in a while.

The 190's seem to be quite popular too.

The vis thing just kills the P-38 for me, although I do like the plane.

I've been trying to work my way up through the 109's lately, with mixed success.

To get around the visibility problems, just adjust your head positions.

And for the sluggish handling "at speed", what speed are you talking about? Between 300mph IAS and 400mph IAS it handles quite nicely with a very responsive roll.  Once you get up around 425mph IAS do the controls become a little stiff but I think you'll find that out with many planes as they reach their upper limits because of the aerodynamic forces that come into play at higher speeds.

Definitely not a plane for new players unless they want to spend a lot of time in the error zone of trial and error.

I think La-7 is the best MA-fighter as it used to be in AH1.

It seems to turn better in AH2 than it did in AH1 and still has the highest speed in the deck of the non-perked planes.

best plane = whatever you're good in that churns out perks.

Spit V & IX are both really popular, but I don't fly them so no opinion. I land the most kills in a P-51D, but it's crap perks. N1k's seem to have really good balance of performance/handling/gun, it's just not too terribly fast so I don't fly it. 190D9 is nice if you do alot of rolling & the WEP is really fast. P-38s are another great balance. Quick, turns good, great vertical fighting, lots of gas, jabo options, pretty durable, and the nose guns are really convenient. Twin engines are also pretty user-friendly to newer players. Only downside to it is bad view & the fact that it's hard to miss.

Ask most others in my squad & they'll say LA-7. I think it attracts too much attention, the ammo load is too small, & it doesn't have enough gas. That's just my opinion though, as there are alot of excellent LA-7 drivers out there :aok

As for my personal pick (far from the best/most balanced fighter) is the 109G-10. Stupid amounts of horsepower, a 30mm cannon, and an airframe that punishes mistakes with a quick trip to the tower after a 450+ mph compressed dive... but it makes enough perks & is scary enough to be fun.

The La-5 is very underrated.

:)  Good points:

1.  At 5k, it is the 13th fastest plane in AH.

2.  Very manuverable.

3.  Excellent climb rate, especially below 8,000 feet.

4.  Two 20mm cannons, with plenty of ammo (200 rounds per     gun), nose mounted (so no convergence problems).

5.  ENY is 30, I believe, so you can fly it anytime and get lots of perks.

:(  Bad points:

1.  Stalls rather abruptly.

2.  View could be better, but setting custom views helps a lot.

3.  Short range / no drop tank.

I use the 190A8 with the 4 20mm cannons option. Very powerful guns package.

ENY is 25, so you are fairly unrestricted.  Fast, excellent roll rate, turns like a lumber wagon with flat tires.  Don't expect to outrun Ponys, LA7s, 109 G10s.  It is about as fast on the deck as a NIKI.

It doesn't turn fight well, so always have a planned egress route.

http://www.telusplanet.net/~dsoder/Fw190A8.htm  Is a good link for ideas on the A8.

It is pretty good, so far this month I am 92/8 k/d in it. :aok

Eh, La-7 is the best fighter we've got, bar none.  Tempest runs a close second.  After that'd I break it up into the "turn fighter" and "fast plane" categories and go with Spit 9, Spit 5, Hurri 2C, Niki in the first category, and Typhoon, P-51, D-9 (iffy) in the second.

Urchin:

I believe he was asking what is the best plane given the new ENY system. That is, one you can fly even with the ENY restrictions.

Without a doubt the Pony D, and the LA7 are top contenders in the non-perks if you don't consider ENY restrictions.  They were all I flew before ENY restrictions changed life for the worse :(

Not one mention of the humble zeke? Whats more fun than makin 5 gangers turn in circles while makin pass after pass? Sure ya die as soon as you straighten out for kill shot but u can usually get a few to auger or killshoot. I tell ya what get 5 or 6 of em 10k and watch your enemy get really confused about how to attack your formation lol.
