I found the three down rule to be a pita, in school we played by NFL rules, otherwize it would just be a punting match.
3 downs gives special team a bigger role in the game.
The CFL players are not as good as the NFL ones that's for sure but the game is great fun.

Just this week the quaterback of Calgary threw a pass that was caught and the receiver punted the ball that was then recovered by one of his teammate, who was behing him when he punted, and he scored a TD. But unfortunatly the ref didn't seem to know they had the right to do that.

Also if the punter is first to take the ball after the punt it's a TO.
