music buffs HELP

Picked this up at a auction here in michigan. Gibson guitar and amp both by gibson. Is this worth something or is it ok to let my 7 yearold have it?

ummm...looks valuable too me.  I certainly wouldn't let a 7 year old play with it.

I've played guitar for almost twenty years and if it's a Gibson it isn't common and therefore it just might be worth some money due to its rarity.

Take it to your local national chain guitar store and ask about it or go on ebay and try to sell it using an obscenely huge reserve bid and find out what people think it might be worth.

That looks like a 1950's lapsteel.  If in good condition is probably worth $500 or so (maybe more).  


Should you let your 7 yr old at it?  Hmmm...tough one.  Fun can be priceless....

It's a:-

Model: BR-9 LapSteel
Available: 1947 to 1959
The most widely sold and least expensive Gibson lapsteel at the time.

1947 BR-9 LapSteel introduction specs:
graduated 3-bout body, brown plastic pickup/bridge cover, 2 white radio knobs on same side, pickup with non-adjustable poles, open-block fingerboard markers with numbers, beige finish, brown fingerboard and trim.
1950 BR-9 LapSteel specs:
adjustable pickup poles.
BR-9 discontinued 1959.


In the condition it looks in the photo, it could be worth a a fair bit to a collector - definitely not a toy !

when you say at the time, you are refering to 1947 to 1959, right?


btw the title to this thread said music buffs, I thought it was something about playing musical chairs with buffs ( bombers)

yes thats not a "guitar" if tuned right the strings wont be able to be fretted. it is meant to be played with a slide.


it is a lap steel, and if you are not familiar with one, listen to counrty music, or more enjoyablly Juinor Brown.

i would not recommend it for a 7 year old. get him a brand new 3/4 size acoustic at the local guitar chain for like $80. after a few years of lessons you will have a better idea if he's really into it.

also that Gibson, id say will sell for over $500 minium, for the guitar only, as a set who knows.
