i'm getting ready to get a new video card - looking at the x800pro, but also eyeballing the x800xt - any major differences? besides the 4 pixel pipelines? and price? Figure its about time to upgrade to a card that will keep me going for the next 2-3 years or more :)

lol extreme - i've been eyeballing the 64 bit-edition also :) Just not sure what the compatibilty will be witn some program I use - mainly proo-tools.

I would not mess with the 64bit edition of Windows right now.  It is a bit of a bandaid, and MS has all but said the 64bit version will not roll out until Longhorn ships next year.
There really is not much of a performance gain to be had.

Xtreme, I am not sure what to tell you about your system.  You have a faster CPU than mine, same amount of ram, and same video card, and look at the score differences.
I think the only significant difference will be the way the OS is setup, but that would not account for that large of a difference between our systems.

Waffle, the X800XT has the 4 extra pipes, and slightly faster ram than the Pro.  Right now, you are going to be CPU handicapped in most situations even with the Pro card.  Your call.

So maybe a system restore is the way to go, get a fresh start?

I havnt done anything to the way windows is setup, basically all stock the way it came.

AMD 64 3200+
Gigabyte K8NS pro
1.5 gb ram

scoring around 1130-1145 with ATI radeon 9500pro/9700

Limited by processor? If I bought an AGP x800 now, would it be wise and wait then for the PCI express to become more available? That seems to be the way things are heading..

Also, what's the difference if between an ATI xt800xt and say a gigabyte x800xt? just the manufacturers label?

Up to you on what to get.  Some of the third party ATI manufacturers alter the cooling, might use different RAM, but they all use the same ATI reference desigh card.  Some switch from the red to another color for the PC board.
As far as PCI Express goes, there is not real good reason to switch from AGP right now.  It will be, at least, a year before the PCI Express bus has any measurable impact due to the lag in system software changes needed to take advantage of its new features.

I finally did mine ...

3728   not the greatest and far from the fastest .

Amd 2500+ M Barton @ 2.4ghz
512 ddr
crucial radeon 9600 pro
win 98se fully tweeked out and sp 1.5 with my few extra processes shut down (kb, av, nv mixer, printer)

Kinda wierd how the 64bit systems aint seeing the higher scores must be software related cause those pc's defentally run harder/faster.

i think the benchmark program software is geared more for 32bit os's and applications

i dont think its giving a true reading at all in the 64 cpu

I also had to do quite a bit of fine tuning and tweeking to get that score . my 1st pass was 3400 area ,i also had to adjust a couple of irq's that were sharing .

Got benchies on an Athlon 64 3800 (s939) running 3d mark using SLI
Top to bottom-
2x6600GTs SLI mode
2x6800 Ultras SLI mode
Single 6800 Ultra
ATI x800 pro

Serious speed there!!!!!
Would expect even more with an FX-55.

The highest score up to now is a pair of 6800s in SLI with an Athlon64 clocked at 2.6GHz - 10533!!!!

Looks like a nice start would be a single PCI-E 6800 then add another later when you want a big boost.

If only I had the cash to spend, how much for a couple of kidneys nowadays?
