Think of all them virgins those ded irakies are gettin up thar in heven.  Strap a couple 'nades on your belt, charge the gate (or walk into the schoolyard, whatever), collect yer reward.

It struck me today during some mission planning that we'll never come to an agreement with some of "those people".  We spend a great deal of our mission planning time ensuring that we have the best chance of making it home, while the average jihadi spends an equal amount of time planning on getting himself killed in a manner spectacular enough to attract his prophet's attention so he gets his virgins when he blows himself to bits.

I've talked to instructor pilots who've seen it firsthand...  Islamic exchange student pilots from middle-eastern countries who scare themselves during training and release the controls and begin praying, completely comfortable with the idea that their last seconds are better spent praying instead of trying to save their own lives.  Although I understand it on an intellectual level, that behavior goes against every "instinct" I have and I do not know if there will ever be enough common ground to bridge that gap.

I read a report on a fighter aircraft mishap recently...  The pilot (from a hardcore islamic nation) lost control at low altitude, but still high enough to eject.  Instead of ejecting, the pilot keyed the microphone and broadcast a curious mixture of terrified screaming and his final prayers.  It's not easy for a westerner to give up like that but from what I heard/read, it made perfect sense to his peers.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

No, I was referring to the other war in Iraq. The one where all the cool terrorist kids wanna go so they can fight US forces. The one that keeps them there in their own little sun baked sand blown fundamentalist delusional back yard dying by the thousands as opposed to coming over to MY country and starting trouble again. The one that protects and furthers the interests of MY nation and is being payed for in the blood of MY countrymen. The one I spent 12 months in the middle of and expect to spend 6-12 more in next year. My only regret: that I could have accomplished more in the time and the limited opportunities I was given. There's always next time.

By the way, Gixer, I couldn't care less how much a litre of gas costs in New Zealand. I don't have any idea whatsoever who the leader(s) of your country are nor do I care enough to learn. I am far beyond giving a dang what someone on the other side of the planet thinks about me, my country, or our geopolitical interests or how we choose to pursue them. It's all so inconsequential, you see..at least to me and the people I know and care for. What you, the nation of New Zealand, the people of the South Pacific, the indigenous kangaroo population or anyone else thinks goes far beyond my realm of influence and affects me personally in no way whatsoever. Don't like my country, our policies or our chosen leaders? Ok, get up and petition your government to put their foot down. Perhaps they'll liberate us.

Does this answer your question?
