It looks like a barrel carrier, I don't think it's a functioning artillery unit. See the clamp unit around the barrel?

It is,21 cm Cannon 39.

.....................

It could very well be a Sdkfz-7 or an 8 it is kinda hard to tell from this angle. Blooz is basicaly right, and Fork is as well in that this is the Barel Wagon. The gun was comprised of three loads totaling 48.2 tons when fully asembled and had a range of 30 km and could traverse 360 degrees.

As a former grunt who took a few arty shells in my time, that gun, IMHO would be a bee-zach to take a shell from.  Anyone know what shells it took?

That would be an 21cm or 8.26 inch shell that got pumped outta that baby. Not terribly conducive to long life on the receiving end I would assume. Considering the amount of damage a 155mm howitzer can put out and its only 6.10 inches around shell size that sucker would seem to be one that would litterally suck the wind right out of you if you were around when it went off.

Canadian Armed Forces Signals(87-97). Two Special Service Force tours. Iranians thought it would be fun to lob a few 88mm at us during a UN patrol in Iraq late 1988.  Only got 80% hearing out of my right ear as a result.   Or it could be from my ex-wife screaming at me. Hard to tell. :D
