I never understood the term PJ and really hated it for some reason. I never saw or heard of a real P38 driver referring to his plane as a PJ.

What the heck is a PJ other then something my kids put on when they went to bed?

That aside, I hope it isn't a J model to go with the L. Gotta go earlier in that H at least but an F or G would be even better.

Good flashbacks to the days when the 38 days of airwarrior. Kinda scary what folks could do with that thing, in particular in RR.

The P38 Pilots Union was a lot stronger back then too. I remember many an occasion where I'd meet up with a 38 driver from another country and we'd wing it into the third country for a bit of confusing action talking to your wingman on the open channel while you worked together

Maybe I should just post a new thread... but why do you guys want another 38 version? I'm not being combative, I just don't know the difference. If we have the L, wouldn't the H just be older and slower? Is there a certain version that would perform better than the one we have now?

Yeah, it was great fun to take on all those supposed hot shot PJ pilots in the spit-o-death and spiral climb their butts and kill them. Man would they get PO'd!!!:p

The P38L is basically "all that a P38 should be." It doesn't work for very many historical setups... North Africa/Mediterranean, earlier ETO, earlier PTO, and other places.

Slack answered part of that. The scenerio guys want a 38 that is more accurate for early war setups. With the ENY balancer Im sure many 38 drivers would like an earlier model to jump in when the ENY hits 15.
Mabey to spin that around, why do all the other major fighters have at least 2 varients, and the P38 only have 1?

From the E to the L the speed difference at 25k is about 25mph. Without looking it up I think the H is about 12mph slower at 25K, mainly do to, iirc the inefficent engine cooling system in early models. So yea, it is older and slower. Nor does it have the dive fillets for compression recovery. Of course it doesnt have the L model tail warning radar...oh wait, neither does the AH L model:)

That about covers it. And of course the early model with the smaller intakes just looks better in my opinion.

Yea, just scanning back through some of these. For the most part things apply to the AH P38L. One of the main issues that need updated would be tactical consideration of the HO. Other that that, it is still pretty spot on.

PJ = P38 J model

Back ina land long ago and far away in a Place called Airwarrior they had the P38 J
Everyone shortened it to PJ
And so its been called ever since

I always assumed that it was 'PJ' was easier to type than P38. Then again, I thought rtb was a typing thing, until I heard Lt Osbourne the pilot of that spy plane talking in a press conference. He said "The other MIG rtbed...excuse me. Returned to base"
