Powell has served admirably for a long time. He deserves to get a break from being on the "front lines" of policy and in politics. to him and his family.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

It was rumored that he'd only do one term. He served it well.

Quote
Powell had been viewed as a one-term secretary of state but he has always been vague about his intentions. He had said repeatedly in recent weeks that he serves at "the pleasure of the president."

One senior official said that Powell's departure was part of a much broader Cabinet shakeup, details of which should be disclosed soon.

There had been speculation that Powell might elect to stay on until after the Iraqi elections at the end of January, but the senior official made no reference to that possibility.

Iraq has dominated Powell's attention during his nearly four years as secretary of state. Powell will perhaps be best remembered for that U.N. Security Council appearance on Feb. 5, 2003, during which he argued that Saddam must be removed because of its possession of weapons of mass destruction. There is no evidence that those claims had any foundation. Powell has maintained all along that the use of force of by the American coalition in Iraq was justified.

Did exactly what?

I am a Republican but I fail to see what he accomplished.

Sorry.    I found him unimpressive and ineffectual.

You gotta give the guy a break.  It's not like you can have diplomacy with terrorists and the country's in Europe that oposed the US led invasion of Iraq were in bed with Sadam and used US hatred to get themselves re-elected.

Gotta agree with Gunslinger here, he was in a tough spot, plus it seems to me that for the last year at least he has been on the outs with the Bush camp. I mean he was making all the headlines for the first 2 years then he just fell off the scale somewhere. I am not suprised to see him go because with all the abuse and difficulties he faced the last 4 years he probably is just sick of it.

Powell is just about the only member of the Bush team that can talk anyone at the UN into anything.  They all have alot of respect for Colin Powell.  Needless to say, most of them dont like Bush much, so he was invaluable to Bush as a go-between to the UN.

That's because Bush never gave him any arrows for his quiver, especially when dealing with Isreal.

General Powell did a very good job of advancing the interests of the United States by means 'other than War' during his term of service. Given what has happened since he took office, I could easily see someone wanting a rest after four years.

I was hearing today that  that position is rarely held for a second term.
by the end of the first 4 years the person holding it is so worn out from the job they just want to get out.

On another thought. I think Rice is a poor choice for the position.
I think she would be better served in a different capacity.
Particularly with the Mid east Isreal Palastine situation.
The Isrealis might not have a problem with it but the Palastinians might not cotton to the idea of having a woman brokering a deal
