PF patch is out
« on: November 18, 2004, 03:43:17 PM »
2 versions

3.01 for the stand alone PF

3.01M (m=merged) for FB/AEP/PF

Check the usual suspects for mirrors. Teh read me is available over at UBI

Some stuff I noticed after playing for several ours:

1st great patch so far (at least for the ac I enjoy)

Default 'dot' visibility is clearly superior to previous versions. Those of you who play no icons will notice you can spot the dots much clearer. I fought 6 yaks at 1000m ont he smolensk mapo and was able to track tthem all even against the trees (full difficult settings).

The MG151/20mm (at least offline) must have been tweaked as I was able to de-wing yaks relatively easy (I flew 109F4 vrs Yak 1s and 7s).

I gained about 5-10 fps since PF box version. (Perfect settings) YMMV.

No DS patch though until next 'add-on' (new planes then as well).

I noticed a change in the dot visibility for ships, dunno about planes as I only tried one engagement... I was more concerned about the low speed handling being fixed.

Good to see the Corsair isn't so easy mode anymore, requires a bit more ease on the stick to land on a carrier. Also REAL glad to see that low throttle will bring down the speed faster - was bugging me since FB came out. The F4F is also a little squirly at low speeds - much better than the one out of the box.

The new water sprites are nice. You don't throw up a huge plume of white stuff when you are on the deck anymore.

Haven't tried much else, but so far - I'm liking the patch. What the game should have been out of the box.

I noticed a dot enhancement too, it's actually a pretty good way of doing it. One pixel white and one pixel black. Looks greyish on the horizon, is black when over a cloud, and is white when over the ocean.

Works pretty well, the more involved mixture control in the planes (the F4F and F4U anyway) is nice and means you have to pay attention. No more shoving 120% mixture in the engine at 5,000meters.

Yeah I noticed the mixture on the F-4F as well I was like what the heck.. I'm smoking at 5000M thats odd.. reminds me I need to re-map my mixture controls on my stick.. lol..

If you've attempted the 3.01m patch you should try the 3.01m_new patch which is optimized. I like the optimized version of PF, it loads in less then 5 seconds..

The optimized one has issues.

You need to use the specific settings for your video card in il2setup. Which means no S3TC compression. If you don't, you get wierd grey squares in place of objects. It also stutters a lot more. Can't use a noCD rts.dll either, which means you have to leave the CD in the drive.

I use a modified rts and also use the hakenkreuz (swastika enabler) exe...

Until there's a no CD crack for the new exe and the HK is modified to work with it I will hold off..

Besides faster load times what other improvement is there?

Any FPS gain? reduced mem useage?

I like that the dots are still extremely hard to see against the ground. Its not like a neon sign.

I am amazed how frail the Betty is. I can kill them from 500 yards with a long burst from front high. Lights up the wing roots every time. No wonder the US loved its 50s. It is relativly easy to shoot down 4 bettys with a wild cat...

Wotan, there's a FPS boost with the new exe - BUT on my system it's negated by frequent, constant, stuttering of the frame. I went back to the old exe, it may not be as fast with regards to fps and load times - but it's more reliable and less problematic for now.

BTW - I think the new exe is using a different form of Java calls. There's a new directory that's created by the new exe... some new kind of Java interpreter.

how much difference does the 1 gig or ram make over 512mb?
and what kind of java code does it use? It has no java run time requirement for install that I know of.
