If you want to play Day of Defeat: Source, don't get the retail version of the game

Activism is the publisher of DoD and DoD:Source. They 'sell' the box game.

Valve 'owns' the game.

Valve will sell it over steam and provide it as a 'bonus' to those who purchased a Silver or gold package over steam.

I don't how much more simple it gets...

The reason they iuse words like 'eventually' is becasue they don't want to pigeon hole themselves it a a release date like they did with HL2.

DoD:Source realease date is unknown and AFAIK there is no timetable or any info from Valve as to even a possibility of when it is to be released.

Try this...

Go online and get to the games selection screen, right click on HL2 and create a shortcut on your desktop.

Add  " -console" w/o the quotes to the command line of the shortcut so it looks like this:

E:\Games\Steam\Steam.exe -applaunch 220 -console

Using the  -console in the command line seems to bypass the startup graphis and makes my machine launch the game much quicker. Hit the tildie key to open/close the console.

Then either firewall Steam or somehow disable your dial-up connection if you have it set to go online on demand.

Whe you launch from the shortcut Steam will try to go online to log you in, without the connection you'll get the "retry connection" and "stay in offline mode" box, select the offline mode and the game should launch to the Valve splash animation.

i wouldnt mind paying an extra $5 or $10 bucks for DoD:S. If they want retail buyers to actually buy another whole copy of the 'silver' edition, they're outta their minds.

I dont expect anything free but I don't expect to get shafted just cuz I went the traditional route of actually buying my game from a store.

Moose DoD:Source will be a stand alone retail game.

The only folks that get it for 'free' (if you can even call it that) are those who purchased the Silver or Gold packages via steam.

In general if you want DoD there will be a 'legal' way to get it. Of course there will alwasy be those 'not so legal ways' to get it.

FYI: there won't any gameplay changes to DoD:Source. Its just the same old DoD game play with the Source engine.

Just like CS:Source is the same game as CS 1.6

Well there will be mods but HL2 is really the story of the bearded ghey looking guy Gordan Freeman.

For HL1 the official mods were Blue Shift (play as Barney) and Opposing Force (play as Recon Soldier). There's also a mod that lets you play as one of the alien's.

I am sure there will be similiar mods for HL2.
