The Essential Bogeyman
« on: December 02, 2004, 08:56:59 PM »
The recent post of Lazs' where he, after expressing his "disappointment" in not seeing any of us liberals start bawling after the election, so instead turns to flipping the radio dial in search of self flagellation-type pron, got me thinking...

.... about the mind of the modern Republican. Heh....

Because if you take a sampling of this BBS for say, a week, you'll find that Nilsen doesn't make angry posts about guns. That Dude doesn't make angry posts about abortion. That Capt apathy doesn't make angry posts about God. That SOB doesn't make angry posts about governmental monitoring of his downloads.

In fact, where IS the outrage of the left?

Sure... once the outrage of the Right trots its self-righteous arse into the public forum by way of posts titled "Indefensible!", a few of us will chuck the punch. But, why is it that we never start this stuff?

It's probably worth noting:

White House....... check.
Senate................ check.
Congress............. check.
Supreme Court.... check.

All Republican controlled. This should be fricking party time. Not time to dial into self loathing on the radio. Not time to seek out ever more marginalized hot button issues with which to work oneself into a volcanic rage or smug BBS group therapy.

Then I was reminded of an article I read a few weeks ago. It just rang true to me. Not all of it, and not exactly, but generally... It felt... familiar:

Quote
The problem not only with fundamentalist Christians but with Republicans in general is not that they act on blind faith, without thinking. The problem is that they are incorrigible doubters with an insatiable appetite for Evidence. What they get off on is not believing, but in having their beliefs tested. That's why their conversations and their media are so completely dominated by implacable bogeymen: marrying gays, liberals, the ACLU, Sean Penn, Europeans and so on. Their faith both in God and their political convictions is too weak to survive without an unceasing string of real and imaginary confrontations with those people - and for those confrontations, they are constantly assembling evidence and facts to make their case.

But here's the twist. They are not looking for facts with which to defeat their opponents. They are looking for facts that ensure them an ever-expanding roster of opponents.

They can be correct facts, incorrect facts, irrelevant facts - it doesn't matter. The point is not to win the argument, the point is to make sure the argument never stops. Permanent war isn't a policy imposed from above; it's an emotional imperative that rises from the bottom. In a way, it actually helps if the fact is dubious or untrue because that guarantees an argument. You're arguing the particulars, where you're right, while they're arguing the underlying generalities, where they are.

Once you grasp this fact, you're a long way towards understanding what the Hannitys and Limbaughs figured out long ago: These people will swallow anything you feed them, so long as it leaves them with a demon to wrestle with in their dreams.

Which brings me to Left Behind. Who gets left behind? Nobody, that's who. How could they leave us behind? They couldn't live without us. Even their most intimate family meals would seem lonely if we were missing. - Matt Taibbi

Mmmkay, go.

I never have rubbed the election results in anyone's face.

I did notice the same thing Laz mentioned in his post. I was listening to Micheal Savage on 1010 am recently......only it was not Savage.

The station changed to Air America and this Randy Rhodes ( SP) chick was on. This was only about a week ago and she was complaining that "we did not vote for this President, America did not vote for this President"

I admit I was laughing at the stupidity. I later found that Savage had moved a few spots up the dial.

I think you are not being objective here nash...  if you look at all the vitrihol about Bush before the election from the likes of rpm and even yourself it was pure hate....  look at the violence in "demonstrations" and the race... it was pretty much all lefty stuff.   Look at the hate directed at the christian faith here... look at the hate directed at the soldiers and the calling them murderers...

As for sean penn say... he was not a target at all until his malevolent vitrihol made him a target.... look at the michelle moore smear peiece and how it was recieved?   pure hate and the acolades it got were from the left and not based on anything except that it fed their hate....the truth was not in the least important... in fact... not one of the left including you did anything but defend reven the most obvious and outlandish lies in it...

nope pard.... you are one of the rioters screaming in the light of  bonfire while throwing rocks and asking why the conservatives are so mean.  you are cheering on the guys turning over cars while asking for a stop to people saying mean things about you..

and... you live in a city and wear funny shoes and can't speak Californian.

I, like many on the left, are both dissapointed and relieved.

On one hand, apparently we lost, some can accept that as fact, however, some aren't.

http://www.house.gov/judiciary_democrats/ohblackwellltr12204.pdf

On the other hand, there are those of us who feel a sense of relief now that the right now has total control of our government. Why is this? It's because the right can't blame the left for the next four years, two if for some reason we gain a majority again in either house, not likely, IMO.

I'm more of the latter in these two thoughts since I'm getting too old to be a hand wringer and have seen much, much worse things in my life than another four years of a Bush administration.

Please Laz, do a forum search and show me where I have called soldiers murderers.

Yes much better to use the Rainbow Trout then the wee little "Brookie".  The Rainbow is a much hardier fish and certainly more plentiful.  We are trying to replenish our stocks of the lovely Brookies through fish and watre management.  Your support of these efforts will ensure a healthy future for the Brook Trouts and allow future generations of Canadians and Americans to enjoy a peaceful day of "casting".

Well Laz, seeing that the election is over and nothing can be done about it, what's the point? Yeah, Bush is still a moron but he won the election. When he screws the pooch I will let you know it.

Untill something more important comes along, I posted THIS for you to defend his high holiness' actions. You may not have to wait long, NBC has uncovered mismanagement and incompetence in the handling of Iraq's oil money by Bush's administration.

Quote
In a series of reports on U.S. management of the oil money, auditors working for the United Nation's Iraq Advisory and Monitoring Board and the Inspector General of the Coalition Provisional Authority found:

*Insufficient controls
*Missing records
*Two sets of books at Iraq's Finance Ministry, which did not match

In one example of insufficient controls, the United States stored hundreds of millions of oil dollars in a vault in a Baghdad palace. Government auditors found that the key to the vault was kept “unsecured” — in a U.S. official’s backpack.

Iraq’s U.S. administrator, Paul Bremer, pledged last year to hire a certified public accounting firm to ensure proper controls. But the United States gave the contract not to an accounting firm but to a tiny consulting company, Northstar — which NBC News found is headquartered at a private home near San Diego.

"They violated the rules. They picked a contractor who didn’t meet their requirements," says Paul Light, a government contracting expert and professor at New York University.

Northstar’s president says the Pentagon knew Northstar was not a certified public accounting firm and that four experienced employees went to Iraq and did a good job. However, one audit notes that a single Northstar employee maintained spreadsheets tracking billions of dollars.

Bremer would not comment. His aides say Iraq is a war zone and their top priority was getting money quickly where it was needed, even if the accounting wasn't perfect.

But NBC News has learned that a draft government audit faults the United States for “inadequate stewardship” of up to $8.8 billion in oil money, handed over to Iraq’s ministries but never fully accounted for.

I mean really, who cares if we waste/lose/steal Iraq's oil money. We can just get Congress to make up the difference with US tax money.
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.
