Look Gunslinger, just have it ypur way. Christmas is not a holiday that originated from celebration of Jesus Christ's birth...

And to think you actually complained about a California school trying to eliminate the Decleration of independance because it mentioned god..

Were did I ever say that?  I said as we know it today!  In germany they used to celebrate (and still do) Nicklaus (SP) Day.

Like I said the Church bishops got worried that it was more populare than the birth of Jesus so they COMBINED the days and made Christmas as we know it today.  That is the ORIGIN of Christmas.  and AGAIN you Don't have to be christian to celebrate it.

I say this because this is yet another reason why I think it's insane that we can't say Merry Christmas in public places.  to me it's censorship of religion.

I would just like to point out that this country was *NOT* founded on jewish principles.  In fact, a jewish man couldn't do much that a christian could up until the populist reforms where every single white male was important, even if he didn't own a plantation.

Well technically it was Santa's chained slave Black Peter or "Swarte Piet" that did the actual dropping off of the gifts.  

So you're right, Christmas isn't just about celebrating the birth of Jesus, it's also about celebrating slavery.  :eek:

no but it was founded on their beleifs.
Many of our laws were in fact based on the ten commandments which was the point I was trying to make

I was lead to believe that Xmas was really sometime in November, but got shifted to cover up Yule, which was a dreadful old pagan festival on the midwinter solstice, involving sinful acts like eating and drinking and laughing. Although there's also some who claim it was Mithras' birthday rather than Yule that it was meant to replace.

most jewish holidays also originate in pagan festivities, usually agricultural related. Most of the biblical holidays happen in the middle of the jewish (lunar) month when the moon is full - good for late night celebration before electricity...
It was easier to swallow the pagan holidays and give them jewish meaning instead of fighting them. Christianity did the same.

Hanuka is actually a civil holiday that was turned religious. It does not appear in the bible.  It celebrates the last Jewish victory (against the greeks) and independance in two thousand years since ~160BC (till 1948AD). The Jewish kingdom (Hashmonai) lasted till 67BC when it was conquered by the Romans.

I'm not sure when the celebration in memory of the victory and independence turned into an official holiday.
