Italian planes were designed much like the Japanese. To be manuervable so the pilots can use aerobatics in dogfights. Such the case with Fiat CR.42, Macchi C.200, Fiat G50 and the Japanese zero. But after Hurricanes and P-40s showed up in North Africa things needed to be changed. The italian guns and radial engines were quite poor by 1940s standard. The 202 was basicaly a 200 with german DB 601 engine and new fuesalage. Many 200 parts stayed to keep manueravbilty and to start production quickly. The 202 tough still had the 12.7mm guns. The 7.7mm wing guns were rarely used. The 202 outclassed the p-40 and hurricane easily, and was on par with the Spit 5, except for guns.
When p-38s, spit9 etc. showed up it was time for upgrade in 202. DB 605 engine was fitted along with 2 x 20mm Mauser cannon. 3 Italian fighters the 205, the Re 2005 and the Fiat G55 produced in very small numbers were the best, least know fighters equal to the P-51, Fw190,Spit9,F6F,F4U and even better still
